What are pinouts? - Pinouts are the specifications for ports and cables which describe what wires and/or pins do what and other electronic specs.

What can pinouts be used for? - Pinouts are especially handy when trying to make custom cables and/or adaptors or when trying to develop hardware to interface with a specific type or port.

Where can I get pinout documents? - There are various sources around the web, but one of the best methods is to go to Apple's Tech Info Library and search for "pinouts". Below is a list of commonly needed pinouts (from the Tech Info Library):
