Administrator your AirPort Base Station

If you want to change a setting later, use this guide to help you change any setting in your Base Station.

Open the AirPort Admin Utility Application
Select the AirPort Base Station you want to change and click on the Configure button.
AirPort tab:
- Entering your Identity is optional
- Change the Base Station Password for to lock out other people from changing any parameters.
- Enter your AirPort network name - this is the name other Macs will see.
- You can select "Create a closed network" if you want.
- Leave the Channel Frequency alone for now, it comes into play if you have multiple Base Stations.
- It is up to you to select "Enable Encryption". If you have any IBM PCs which is going to share the Base Station's internet connection, I have found it to be best to leave it off. Otherwise enable it.
Internet tab:
- Enter your Internet configuration information here.
Network tab:
This is the tough part
- You want to Distribute IP addresses.
- I use the "Share a single IP address" option to let the Base Station hand out IP addresses to the other computers that it talks to.
- "Enable DHCP server on Ethernet" - is a must to make sure the Base Station can see your Ethernet based comptuers.
- Only use "Enable AirPort to Ethernet bridging" if you need to access a IP based server or IP based computer on Ethernet from the AirPort side. AppleTalk packets will not be bridged.
Access Control tab:
- Enter all AirPort card IDs here of your AirPort based clients. If you don't anyone in the next house or building could use your AirPort connection for free. Anyone listed here can connect, otherwise they will not see your AirPort network.
If you click on the "Optimize Placement..." button it will tell you the current placement if your Mac in correlation to the Base Station.
