Macintosh SE, SE FDHD & SE/30
Removing Fool-Proof -
Q. I have a Mac with the program Fool-Proof on it. It has locked me out and I don't have the password.
A. The following will help you delete the whole hard drive partition, setup a new partition and install the OS. You will need the install disks for the version of the System Software (Mac OS) you need. This will delete all information on the hard drive.
1.) Boot with the Disk Tools diskette.
2.) Run Apple HD SC Setup (A hard disk partitioning tool)
3.) Select the hard drive and click on the Initialize button. Follow any prompts taking the default options.
4.) Once you are done formatting. Reboot from the install me first diskette and proceed to install.
This should format over the whole hard drive. Fool-Proof will not be in memory so it should not lock it.
PRAM battery
Q. Is it possible to change the PRAM battery in a Mac SE or SE/30?
A. Yes and No, the battery is soldered on the motherboard. If you can unsolder and resolder, you can change it.
Power Supplies from a Classic II
Q. Is it possible to take the power supply from a Classic II and install it in my SE/30?
A. No, the Classic and Classic II have a different power supply setup than the SE, SE FDHD and the SE/30. The Classic & Classic II power supply components are on the analog board, where the SE, SE FDHD and SE/30 is in a seperate box inside of the Mac.
Bad floppy drive
Q. My Mac SE/30 crashes while formatting a floppy disk. I have taken another floppy drive from a Mac SE FDHD and the SE/30 still has the same problem.
A. You have one of three problems - Bad System Software, bad floppy drive ribbon cable, or a bad SE/30 motherboard.
- To rule out the software, boot the SE/30 with a boot disk, rename your existing System Folder, reinstall the System Software.
- To rule out the ribbon cable, use the one from the Mac SE.
- If the above two items are ok, then it is your Mac SE/30 motherboard. As you have tried new System Software, drive ribbon cables and floppy drives, this is it.
SE/30 does not boot up
Q. When I trun on my Mac SE/30 I get a grey screen, nothing else.
A. This indicates to me a hardware problem.
- I would try to remove all by 4 memory SIMMS, then boot the SE/30 up. If it works know, you have a bad or wrong memory SIMM.
- Remove any cards in the SE/30, then boot the SE/30 up. If it works know, you have a wrong type of card or a weak power supply.
- Try unplugging the hard drive, then boot the SE/30 up. If it works know, you have a weak power supply.
