Apple Network Assistant 4.0.4

This document describes Apple Network Assistant 4.0.4 and tells you how to install the software. Please read it before installing the software.

This release includes only the Network Assistant Startup extension.

Changes in Network Assistant 4.0.4

· Slow Copy Issue: Version 4.0.4 improves performance for copies performed via the Copy Items and Copy Hard Disk commands to user workstations when there is an AirPort Base Station between the administrator workstations and the user's workstation.

AirPort Performance

Connecting the administrator workstation to the network via an ethernet cable instead of a wireless connection will improve performance.

Selecting "Only send changes made by QuickDraw" in preferences will increase screen sharing performance to machines connected via Airport.

Installing Apple Network Assistant 4.0.4

In order to update your workstations to 4.0.4, you need to have version 4.0.3, 4.0.2, 4.0.1 or 3.6.2 of Network Assistant already installed.

Updating administrator workstations

1. Drag version 4.0.4 of the Network Assistant Startup extension to the System Folder on the workstation.

2. A dialog box appears asking if you want to place the item in the Extensions folder. Click OK.

3. Another dialog box appears asking if you want to replace the older item. Click OK.

4. Restart the workstation.

Updating user workstations

On user workstations, you need to update the workstation's version of Network Assistant Startup. (Network Assistant Security does not need to be updated.)

· If the workstation is using Mac OS 8.1 through Mac OS 8.6: You can now use version 4.0.4 of Network Assistant Startup to replace version 3.6.2 of Network Assistant Startup.

· If the workstation is using Mac OS 9.0 or later: You need to install version 4.0.4 of Network Assistant Startup to replace version 4.0.2 or 4.0.3 of Network Assistant Startup.

You can use the System Information command to determine which version of Mac OS is installed on a workstation.

You can update user workstations remotely using Network Assistant. In order to do this, the following administrator access privileges must be set for each user workstation (in the Network Assistant Security application on the workstation):

· Restart and shut down this workstation
· Copy items to this workstation
· Delete and replace items on this workstation

To update user workstations using Network Assistant:

1. Open Network Assistant and select the workstations you want to update in the Workstation Status window or any report window.

3. With the workstations still selected in the Workstation Status window or any report window, choose Restart from the Manage menu to restart the workstations.

To update user workstations by hand:
