Just Updated 7/22/2000 Well I guess you all have seen the new Macs by now. If not then go visit Apples web site and check them out! Me and my wife really like the G4 Cube :) we would get one right now if we had the money :( Also the new keyboard and mouse are welcome upgrades! OS 9 and the Geo modem: I got an overwhelming response to the TIL I posted last week on OS 9 not being supported in OS 9. It seems many users have their Geo modems working fine but you cannot access the Express Modem control panel unless you hold the CMND-CNTL keys while opening the control panel. Also it seems that a clean install of the telecom software and maybe even OS 9 is in order to make the Geo work better? MIDI still won't work so don't expect OS 9 to fix this issue :( I even tried the Geo modem on my 6400 last night with OS 9.0.4 installed and it worked. My COX cable connection dropped so I decided to fire up the Geo :) I wanted to try faxing and the Apple Phone software before I posted this but I didn't have the time. Some people have told me they work and I will try by next week. Plugging headphones in/out to fix 6400 freezes, update: Well I have gotten a few replies stating this is helping people unfreeze their 6400's. It is a full length card and does get in the way of the ribbon cables deep within the case but it might just fit? I will have pics posted next update hopefully. If you refer to the attached images you can see most of my "FrankenMac" The plastic covers and some shielding were removed because I was experiencing overheating/shutdowns. The power supply has been removed for cleaning a couple of times now but the first time I removed it, no wonder it was overheating.... there wasn't any space inside that wasn't filled with crud! Cleaning out the power supply made a big difference and the fan no longer oscillates. I have an extra fan blowing cool air onto the processor card as illustrated in one of the pictures. Eventually I will wire it into the computer instead of running it off of the external power supply and mount it securely. My office gets hot and stuffy so I decided to buy an air conditioner. Central air was not an option and a window air conditioner would create a security concern as well as costly modifications to the building so another solution was required. I had no idea that portable air conditioners even existed until I asked Sherlock to find me one! Sherlock found Toyotomi air conditioners and within a week I had mine set up. The unit is shown in the pictures and you can read up on it at www.toyotomiusa.com. I haven't yed made any special ductwork for getting the cool air to the computer chassis yet. My initial experiments have just been by pointing the airflow using the air conditioners louvres, toward my Performa. I have achieved 7 degrees celsius this way. I am toying with the idea of actually bolting the computer chassis to the air conditioner thus creating a cooled-chassis-on-wheels! I may wait a year for my air conditioner's warranty to expire since my current set-up has eliminated all heat issues for now. Anyway If you have the $1000 or so it is possible to get an air conditioner that you can wheel over to your computer to keep it cool.
