Just Updated 7/29/2000

The 6400 Zone will start to be updated only twice a month: I'm finding it very difficult to keep posting new info every week. I've started doing more overtime at work and with less time for family activities, I need to make up time somewhere. And guess where I'm going to find it :) This, in no way, means I am shutting down. Just that I won't be updating the site as often. I'll still answer emails as often as I can so please keep the info and questions pooring in.

Another problem is that they just switched us from Mac's to PC's at work and my old software to read my AOL account from work is not working anymore :( We have NT 4.0 installed so we're locked out of a lot of the system stuff. The only good news about this is that we went from 200Mhz 604e's to 600Mhz PIII's so they do feel faster but I no longer have control of what software I can install. But, so I didn't feel longing for my Mac I installed several Win GUI enhancments that makes NT look like OS 8.6 :) Mac Window borders, Mac menu with Apple Menu and Application Menu, Mouse images and the startup splash screen all added. And with NT having good multi user capabilities, I am the only user that gets to see these changes when I log on. Everyone else sees plain old Win NT.

OS 9.0.4 and Floppy disk formatting issue?: Lately, every time I try to format a floppy disk on my 6400 with OS 9.0.4 installed I get an error that the disk is locked or bad and the format cannot complete? I can then take this disk and format it on my other 6400 with OS 8.6 just fine! I have already swapped out the floppy with another drive and I get the same results. Althoutgh both drives are old I don't see how both would die at the same time? My next test is to boot into OS 8.6 on this 6400 and see what happens. Has anyone else seen this problem?

Interested in getting a 500Mhz L2 G3 for the price of a 400Mhz L2 G3?: Terry got a 500Mhz G3 for his 6400 by a stroke of luck and because it will only run at 400Mhz on the 6400, wants to trade for a 400Mhz card! Any 6500 owners interested :) Just email him for more info.

    [I installed a Sonnet G3/500 L2 1M in my wife's 6400/180. I had ordered the g3/400 but they were out of stock.

After installing it and seeing that it was only doing 400 I contacted sonnet to find out that it max's out at 10 times the 40MHz bus.

Well I have more than I need but don't want the down time for the swap.

If you know anyone that can use a 500 and is interested in swapping me a 400 for it, let me know.
    Terry]

Update on using the Airports 56k modem with a 6400: I have received a few letters from users that say you can use the 56k modem with the 6400/6500 just fine. Thanks guys. Here is one from Bob.

    [FYI,
I'm sending this from my 6500 (close enough to a 6400?), via my connection through the household's Airport and its 56K modem. I bought it to support my wife's iBook wirelessly and also use it to connect my 6500 and the kids' iMac DV SE to the net - all at the same time. The Airport also provides my wife with wireless access to the appletalk printers - an Apple NTR and an HP 855C via a Farallon ethernet to localtalk bridge.

I did the original Airport setup from the iBook, using the wizards included with the Airport software. However, since then I've done all Airport management from the 6500 using the Airport Admin Utility. I'm fairly sure all setup can be accomplished from the Admin Utility. I don't think that the wizards will run on the 6500 and I believe I copied the Admin Utility from the iBook to the 6500 rather than install it directly - I don't think the original installer ran on the 6500 - I think the current ones do - if not, use Tome Viewer to get the Admin Utility out of the installer tomes.

More info on using non-OS 9 compliant software like the Geo under OS 9: David sends word that he is running a utility called Nine 11 that lets you run older software in OS 9 that might normally crash it. Thanks David.

[Sorry, I should have included more info.

    http://www.akua.com/Software/Nine11/index.html

"Nine 11 1.3 is the utility that allows you to bypass Mac OS 9 119 error message, potentially allowing you to run applications that would otherwise not work in Mac OS 9. The update includes a custom alert handler that installs everything in the System's heap if it is not the current heap - for added safety. Controversy remains as to whether this is a "safe" utility or not. Use at your own risk." (from macfixit)

When I use it, it prevents System Error 10 when the on startup. If I exclude Express Modem Control Panel I don't get the error or if I included Nine 11.

Yes Fax and voice calling also work.

There are a couple of things that don't work with the fax. Holding down the option key when pulling done the file menu to print does not change the print menu item to fax nor does attaching a file to be faxed. But those two items haven't worked since Mac OS 8.0

    Regards David]

Last update I wrote that possibly a clean install of OS 9 or the Telecom software or both would help the Geo run more reliably. I did this and I do not get the Type 10 error he mentions.

Voodoo 4/5 info page for the 6400/6500?: I've started a new page for the Voodoo 4 / 5. Right now I posted links to reviews and pics on what the Voodoo5 card looks like and how it might fit in a 6400/6500.

CD containing the 6400 Zone plus past history for sale 9/3/1999

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in purchasing a CD with my entire up-to-date site as well as my 6400 Take Apart manual plus many of the past Just Updates included? I think this would be a great idea for anyone who hasn't been able to keep up or never saw my site until recently. Also for those of you with Sherlock the CD is even better cause you can tell Sherlock to index the CD and then you can do a search on any topic and if I ever talked about it, you'll find it! I have info as far back as mid 1997. I'm asking $15 which includes shipping for US residents (not sure what the price for international shipments would be yet?) and I will even include a few surprises! To make this offer even juicier I can add some download that you've been trying to get but just couldn't for some reason. Lets put my cable modem to work :)

amazon.com, books and more 7/2/98

I found a great way to earn some money while getting great deals to you on Macintosh books and software plus they have all kinds of other books, music, and more. Please click on the amazon.com link on the top of this page whenever you feel like purchasing something to help sponsor this site. If you're unsure of what you want and wish to get a list of Mac related items, just type Macintosh in the search field on their home page and you will be presented with many choices to select.

Link to my site that gets rid of AOL's ads! 9/16/98

Jeff did some digging in to the new code that displays the frames on my site with AOL ads and found a link that can be used which will not show those annoying ads. Here is the address. http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/TMK12v/home.html
Thanks Jeff, for sending this info. PS don't let AOL find out :)

Here's an even better link http://members.aol.com/zone6400 I like this one better :)

The 6400 Zone is created to help you gain access to useful software updates and great shareware programs that add functionality to your system. It is also a one stop road map to other informative sites for answering your questions. Most of the info here is geared towards the 6400, but it is useful for all PCI Performa models and even the 6500 and all-in-one Macs based on the same. It's even useful to other MAC systems. I will be referring to my 6400/200 clocked to 220Mhz as just 6400/220, OK.

I will keep it updated as often as I can but I don't have much free time to work on it, so I suggest you check back at least once a week. That should be sufficient. If you don't see something you would like to see here or have your own software / web site that would benefit the MAC community, please write to me at TMK12v@aol.com and I will check it out.

I use a Performa 6400/180 OS 9.0.4, Performa 6400/220 OS 8.6, B&W G3/350 OS 8.6, PowerBook G3/233 OS 9.0.4, PM 6100 G3/240 OS 9.0.4, and a PowerBook DUO 270c OS 7.5.5. All of the software updates posted here are currently running on one or the other with minimal problems. If I do encounter a problem, I will post it for all to read and respond to. If you are having any problems and would like help just email me and if I can answer it I will, or I will post it here for others to read and respond to.
