Just Updated 8/26/2000

6400 Zone text layout: I changed the way this page looks to test a new feature of the web called Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). I made it so no matter which browser or OS you use, my page will hopefully look the same? This includes any font size you pick in each particular browser. I force a certain size. I only did this change to my home page for now as a test. Please tell me what you think :)

This pretty much will only work if you have the TIMES font installed which almost every computer in the world does. I just wanted to be neutral on all platforms. I really hate having to change my browsers font because a site was made for a PC :( I wanted to make my site work on PC's as well as it does on Macs :) Normally a site made for a Mac will look very large on a PC.

UPDATE: I just posted a new page that turns these features off. I didn't think that some of you might prefer a larger text size then what I picked. So I reverted everything back to normal and you all have your choice of text sizes again :)

The 6400 Zone Forums!: Well, my forums seem to be very popular so far :) Great! let me know if there is anything you think I should change. I can do some changes but not like what you see on the other forums.

I did notice a few glitches in it today? The forum page is getting much larger now and sometimes a banner ad appears in the middle of the text and sometimes the text is gone but the bullets remain? i found that reloading the page fixes it and using the link for back to the main forums page from in the middle of threads also fixes it (instead of your browsers back button). I don't know when it will get archived so I might have to change the size of the page before it gets archived. I think I have it set to 100k right now before archiving?

Mac OSX on a 6400 update: I haven't found a way to get OSX on our 6400's yet but, by accident I may have gotten us one step closer! The other day I ran Norton Disk Doctor on my PB G3 (which has DP4 installed) and it gave me a warning that the HD partition map was bad? I told it to fix the problem not thinking much of it at the time. Then on my next reboot something interesting appeared on my desktop. There was another partition mounted with the name MOSX_Booter ? Well this peaked my interest to say the least. I opened it up to find a System Folder and a ReadMe file. I opened the system folder and found 3 files: Finder, System, and BootX! Yup there it was staring me in the face, BootX. It was not an app but just a document. I read the ReadMe and it stated that this partition should normally be invisible but may become visible in certain circumstances, i.e.: running Norton :)

It then says to not disturb anything or OSX may not boot properly. So it seems that Apple is using BootX and does not boot directly into OSX. They just created a very, very small System folder to do the switch from Mac OS to OSX very quickly. Here is even better news! I copied it all and placed it on my web site for you all to tinker with :) Aren't I a nice guy :) MOSX_Booter.sit

Please let me know if you get anywhere with it! I will be trying it myself as time permits. Thanks.

Update on Floppy Drive issue with OS 9: I have received many more letters from people who also lost the use of their floppy drive after updating to OS 9 and I also received some from people who say it still works? In the middle are people who say that Mac floppies work but PC floppies are no longer recognized? This is going to take a lot of effort to narrow down. I still suggest anyone with this problem to email Apple or leave a message on their forums. I just updated my wife's 6400 to OS 9 so she could use some of the newer features and guess what? It lost the floppy also :( The only Mac I have now working with a floppy drive is my PB which has OS 9 on it so it this issue seems limited to older Macs if not the 6400/6500 family only? Here is a letter from Ralph who gave me some suggestions to try but I haven't had to time to try them yet. Maybe one of you can let me know if they help? Thanks Ralph.

[I wonder why your floppy is not working? Did you try the Apple 6360/64xx/54xx Update yet? Its old and should not be needed with OS9 and really is only meant to fix external SCSI problems. I found it through your page and the UMAC SCSI scanner problems. The UMAX site is: http://www.umax.com/support/knowledge/solutionsSC.cfm?docs=SC00043 and the Apple download site is: http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n10019 It said to only use it if series 6400s were having SCSI bus errors like SCSI bus lockup on start or unable to access drive/scanner errors.

** Here is something that might work, its the old 5xxx/6xxx Floppy Fix for up to PM6300 series computers, might work on 6400s too. Sounds exactly like the larger than 600k file save problem too! http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n10011

Fortunately my Int SCSI Apple floppy {floppies are not scsi - Tom} seems fine with OS9 and even the CD/DVD player seems happy with my Apple internal SCSI CDROM drive. I did not try a format or a large file save with it yet. I use it a lot to transfer downloads and text info files from this Winthing to home. So until I get a newer Winpc with a USB port that I can use with a cheap portable USB Orb or HD of some sort, I need the floppy to work. But it is getting ridiculous with only a 1.4meg capacity.

Now that I think about it, I was having intermittent problems with the floppy drive on OS8.6. It showed up mostly like sometimes a floppy would give an unformatted error. Re-inserting it usually worked. and copying to it also would give me problems. I used Tech Tools and a wet cleaner a couple of times and it seemed fixed. But if I ran a file from the floppy, sometimes it would do screwy things. Like GraphicConverter always asking for some floppy before quitting. That error was funny because I had sent the floppy it wanted to my Dad 1500 miles away. I had to trash the GC pref to fix it. Also if I ran GC slide show off a floppy it would lock the system about every 3 times. I just figured it was a GC thing and didn't use the floppy with it any more (the only reason I was doing that was to send pictures to my Dad).]

OS 9 info from MacAddict: Ralph also sent me a link to Mac Addicts OS 9 help page. Thanks Ralph.

Voodoo3 and Vimage G3 upgrade working together?: When I bought my Voodoo3 I tried it right away in my 6400 with Vimages G3 upgrade. The combination I had didn't work at all! But maybe they can work? tom just sent me a letter stating his works fine. Thanks Tom.

    [Hello Thomas.
I had to take my Ati rage+II card out, then it recognized the Voodoo3 2000 and I was on my way. I was surprised about battlenet working so well. I had the same Monitor problem with red tint until I took out the other video card. I also took out the Avid Cinema Card as well. I can not use it any way. I hope you get yours working. Let me know, please!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Yours truly Tom]

I had left my ATI VR RageII card installed when I tested the V3. Perhaps if I had removed it, then it may have worked? I may not try testing since I need the VR card for TV and video input so it really isn't worth it for me to try :( if anyone else tries then please let me know. Thanks

ATI Radeon on older Macs: I found this blurb on Mike's Accelerate Your Mac web site. we might have another upgrade for our video systems after all :)

[ Notes on Mac Models To Be Supported by ATI Radeon PCI: - A post in the forums here noted ATI's Mac Radeon page answers to this question:

What systems will the new RADEON(tm) MAC EDITION work in?

http://www.ati.com/na/pages/products/mac/radeon32/

The RADEON(tm) MAC EDITION AGP version is designed to fit into any AGP based Mac. RADEON(tm) MAC EDITION PCI is designed for PCI-based computers running Mac OS even those limited to 7" cards such as the Performa systems or the Power Macintosh 6400 or 6500."

There was an initial problem with 603e based Macs with the Rage128 Orion (noted in my review last year of that card that was later fixed), so this time around there should (hopefully) be no issues. It's good to see that older Macs will be officially supported by the Radeon. I'm hoping the PCI version does appear late in September, shortly after the AGP retail version is released. The Radeon retail card also features a video output port (for TV use). ]

Hopefully as Mike states, ATI has had some time to fix there driver issues with older Macs and that the Radeon will shine through!

Voodoo5 drivers with a Voodoo3: I have received several letters and forum postings on people using the V5 drivers with their V3's. Tiong so far has been unable to get his V3 to work with them but others have. I even get the V5 drivers to work with my V3 in the B&W G3. I have had only one problem so far and that was with Action GoMac. Just today I started my computer as normal and went to GoMac's menu bar to open some files and all of a sudden the entire screen got garbled? So I rebooted and tried GoMac again and it garbled the screen again but not as bad. I was getting a little worried that my Voodoo3 may be going bad so I rebooted with extensions disabled in an effort to remove the V5 drivers and replace the V3 drivers. But instead I went to the Pref folder and trashed the 3dfx pref file and rebooted. Now it is working ok again. I guess the pref file got corrupted and since the V5 drivers allow for picture caching, font caching and other stuff that the caches may have gotten corrupted by Action GoMac? It is running fine for now but I will keep a close eye on it :)

I checked the version numbers of all the V5 drivers and found that the 2D and 3D libraries state they are for the Voodoo3, Banshee, and Velocity. So I guess these are the next evolution of the V3 drivers after all! Some people say the V5 drivers actually make their V3's run faster at certain tasks? I don't know if this is true or not but QT does seem faster to me. I don't know what to use to test QT though? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Scratch the above. I just had another crash with Action GoMac :( I need GoMac more then the V5 drivers so back to the V3 drivers. I just tried the Halo trailer at full screen with the V3 drivers and it plays as smooth as it did with the V5 drivers but seems more pixelated? Perhaps QT acceleration allows for better anti aliasing for enlarged views?

ZIPCD USB and OCI USB card: I have a reader request Watson for any info on getting a ZIPCD USB drive to work with an OCI USB card. Click here for more details.

He just sent me word that using MacAllys USb card worked but did not let him use the full advertised speed of the drive. I have hear that USB CDR/CDRW drives do not give the full rated speeds because USB is just too slow. I guess its an advertising gimmick that may lash back someday?

Firewire/USB combo cards may not work on our computers at all?: I found this info on MacFixIt's web site the other day. It seems that even though the companies making Firewire/USB combo cards state their cards should work with the 6400/6500 families (Orange had a patch for the 6500) that they still might not be completely functional?

    [FireWire/USB Multifunction PCI Cards

Several FireWire and USB PCI add-on cards may not function in some Macs because of a lack of power in the PCI slots. Jules Galagarza writes:

"During a frustrating go around with FireWire/USB PCI combo cards I wondered why these cards didn't work on my system even though the specs stated they would. The symptoms for both cards were similar. The USB side appears to work but the FireWire side doesn't. PowerLogix could not figure out why their RapidFire combo card did not work on my Performa 6360. They claim it should work however they never tested it on a Performa 6360. (They also mentioned that another individual was having a similar problem.) OrangeMicro made essentially the same claim.

My system has only one PCI slot that supplies up to 15W of power. OrangeMicro confirmed that their combo cards require about 20W to operate efficiently. PowerLogix did not know what the supplied power requirement was for their combo card but accepted a lack of power as the possible cause of my problem with their RapidFire card."]

15W is the same PCI slot max power available on the 6400 as well. Probably the 6500 to. I don't see how they could not have known this? Seems like something they should know specially when making a card that uses so much power! Has anyone gotten both the Firewire and USB sides to work and at the same time? Like using a USB mouse and a Firewire drive.

Director's Cut DV to Analog converter: I found this web site that not only has the mentioned converter but a slue of other video stuff. Even some of the video out cards for the 6400/6500 families! I suggest if your interested in video that you check these guys out.

Apple TV/Video system only showing QuickCam output?: Here is another reader request from Clint who is having trouble getting TV output from his TV/Video system. It just shows his QuickCam output? Click here for more details.

Interested in getting a 500Mhz L2 G3 for the price of a 400Mhz L2 G3?: Terry got a 500Mhz G3 for his 6400 by a stroke of luck and because it will only run at 400Mhz on the 6400, wants to trade for a 400Mhz card! Any 6500 owners interested :) Just email him for more info.

    [I installed a Sonnet G3/500 L2 1M in my wife's 6400/180. I had ordered the g3/400 but they were out of stock.

After installing it and seeing that it was only doing 400 I contacted sonnet to find out that it max's out at 10 times the 40MHz bus.

Well I have more than I need but don't want the down time for the swap.

If you know anyone that can use a 500 and is interested in swapping me a 400 for it, let me know.
    Terry]

CD containing the 6400 Zone plus past history for sale 9/3/1999

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in purchasing a CD with my entire up-to-date site as well as my 6400 Take Apart manual plus many of the past Just Updates included? I think this would be a great idea for anyone who hasn't been able to keep up or never saw my site until recently. Also for those of you with Sherlock the CD is even better cause you can tell Sherlock to index the CD and then you can do a search on any topic and if I ever talked about it, you'll find it! I have info as far back as mid 1997. I'm asking $15 which includes shipping for US residents (not sure what the price for international shipments would be yet?) and I will even include a few surprises! To make this offer even juicier I can add some download that you've been trying to get but just couldn't for some reason. Lets put my cable modem to work :)

amazon.com, books and more 7/2/98

I found a great way to earn some money while getting great deals to you on Macintosh books and software plus they have all kinds of other books, music, and more. Please click on the amazon.com link on the top of this page whenever you feel like purchasing something to help sponsor this site. If you're unsure of what you want and wish to get a list of Mac related items, just type Macintosh in the search field on their home page and you will be presented with many choices to select.

Link to my site that gets rid of AOL's ads! 9/16/98

Jeff did some digging in to the new code that displays the frames on my site with AOL ads and found a link that can be used which will not show those annoying ads. Here is the address. http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/TMK12v/home.html
Thanks Jeff, for sending this info. PS don't let AOL find out :)

Here's an even better link http://members.aol.com/zone6400 I like this one better :)

The 6400 Zone is created to help you gain access to useful software updates and great shareware programs that add functionality to your system. It is also a one stop road map to other informative sites for answering your questions. Most of the info here is geared towards the 6400, but it is useful for all PCI Performa models and even the 6500 and all-in-one Macs based on the same. It's even useful to other MAC systems. I will be referring to my 6400/200 clocked to 220Mhz as just 6400/220, OK.

I will keep it updated as often as I can but I don't have much free time to work on it, so I suggest you check back at least once a week. That should be sufficient. If you don't see something you would like to see here or have your own software / web site that would benefit the MAC community, please write to me at TMK12v@aol.com and I will check it out.

I use a Performa 6400/180 OS 9.0.4, Performa 6400/220 OS 9.0.4, B&W G3/350 OS 8.6, PowerBook G3/233 OS 9.0.4, PM 6100 G3/240 OS 9.0.4, and a PowerBook DUO 270c OS 7.5.5. All of the software updates posted here are currently running on one or the other with minimal problems. If I do encounter a problem, I will post it for all to read and respond to. If you are having any problems and would like help just email me and if I can answer it I will, or I will post it here for others to read and respond to.
