I tried the link and it still works. The page asks for an email address so I don't know where that info is going since Apple removed this page from their web site? Last week someone gave me info on getting v1.0.2 by doing a google search and downloading it from their cached site. The price is still $15 but you get 2 knobs instead of one. Thanks Tom. I placed the previous info on a new page in my online manual. [Tom, I saw the recent activity on trying to find replacement subwoofer knobs for the 6400/6500 computers. I have already had to replace mine twice. And who isn't :) Crescendo 1.4.5 may cause freezes: Ken is the first person to tell me that once he updated to the 1.4.5 version of the Sonnet Crescendo driver, his startup freezes returned. Downgrading to the 1.4.1 driver fixed it. Thanks Ken. There are versions in between these 2 so it's not necessary to revert all way to 1.4.1. [I recently installed the Sonnet Crescendo 1.4.5 extension to replace v. 1.4.1. Oh boy: now those nasty startup freezes are back again! I had been 100% free of them ever since v.1.4.1 was released. Not only freezes, but I have also had occasional restarts when the Crescendo extension loads (which is then usually followed by a freeze on the subsequent start). I guess I am going back to 1.4.1. Ken] Update on TAM HD size limits and some DV info from a TAM user: I had posted some info I found awhile ago on TAMs (20th Anniversary Macs) not being able to use HD partitions larger the 4G. Harry wrote to let me know he was using an 18G HD and it worked fine. He later wrote to say it was formatted with FWB so maybe Apples drivers have trouble on TAM's? Or like I posted last week, it could be just a myth :) [Hello, FPS with DV capture is tricky sometimes. Two methods I have used: (1) EditDV in a two pass approach - capture video only then capture audio only, (2) Use iMovie to capture audio and video but only on a clean partition. These two methods result in no dropped frames (most of the time). I drop frames with FCP. I can not capture DV A+V simultaneously with EditDV. The limiting factor on the TAM for DV is the 50 MHz bus which is just barely enough for DV capture to work. Export DV using EditDV or iMovie works fine. Sonnet L2 G3 in a PowerBase minitower: Sonnet had never actually advertised this setup but rather listed only PowerBase or PowerBase (desktop). Frank emailed Sonnet and they replied that it will work in the PB minitower. Thanks Frank. For those of you that don't know, the PowerBase was built by PowerComputing when clones where allowed. It is based on the 6400 motherboard but has 3 PCI slots instead of 2. He also clocked his mother board to 45Mhz by replacing the MB crystal. He'll see if the Sonnet 400Mhz G3 card works as a 450! Thanks, we'll be waiting :) ADS USB card + Contour mouse = unrecognized: I'm not sure if more people are having this trouble but Balin was unable to get his Contour mouse to be recognized by an ADS USB card. He later wrote back that adding a USB HUB in the middle fixed it. Thanks Balin. [You were right! I bought a NewerTech 7-port powered USB and viola! no more disappearing mouse. Thanks. Balin] Two things may could be going on here. Either the drivers for the mouse are buggy or perhaps the ADS USB ports could not supply enough power to the mouse? I have not tried a mouse on my ADS card yet but a SmartMedia card reader on it works fine. It's drawing all its power from the USB ports to. No option to select HD location for 6400's Restore CD?: Bill found that when he tried to use the 6400 Restore CD (which restores your 6400 to the factory software settings) he could not choose which HD or partition to install to? Apparently Apple must have never considered that we might install more HD's or partition the stock one. Bad Apple! Here is the info he found on how to get around this. Thanks Bill. [Thanks for reply Thomas. Yes have tried installer but no option to select installation disc is given. A ClubMac Australia member found the solution from the Apple TIL library. I did look but didn't find it myself so here is the answer to the problem. - - There are two methods that Apple recommend. 1) Transfer files from restore CD to desired disc after booting from restore CD. OR 2) Boot from restored disc and trash the mounted volumes you don't want the restore to go to. Since it will not see the trashed volumes the restore software will then go to the mounted volume. - Then of course remove the trashed volumes again from the trash.- Fairly obvious I suppose so I should have thought of it myself. {Tom - Actually you cannot remove unmounted volumes from the trash. You either have to reboot or use DriveSetup to mount the volumes again} I have posted this on the Macfixits site for all Performa users knowledge. Bill] G3 overclockers Beware!: Nikos sends word that his mother board fried and he had a Sonnet G3 300 running at 325. I'm not sure the clocking is to blame and possibly his motherboard was going south to begin with since he says he had much trouble getting it overclocked in the first place. I just wanted to warn people of what could happen when overclocking. [I believe truly that overclocking the G3 to 325 raise the temperature enough to fry something in the motherboard or there is somewhere in the motherboard a bad rom or................... your guess is as good as mine. All I know is I had a bunch of trouble overclocking it and no fun trying but it was a glorry after I succeeded and it might not sound as much but the xtra 25MHZ really made a big difference in speed. I have yet to be able to find one but maybe one of you have? Also he is looking for a Firewire CDRW drive. I told him that todays CDRW firewire drives are really IDE drives with firewire adaptors in the case. If this is not true could you please email me the info. I'm sure others may be interested. [I would like to swap out my stock Apple CD-ROM for a compatible CD-RW drive. Are there CD-RW drives available that will fit neatly into my 6400 CD-ROM Bay? With this in mind, would it be possible to put a PCI Firewire card into my open slot and use the versions that have an internal port also to connect directly to the CD-RW? Al] Info on using 128M DIMMs again?: I don't know why I'm posting this yet but Rick had sent word that he is using 2 - 128M DIMMs to get 270M ram (plus 8M on Mother board). All the info I have says this should not work. I also received word from other 6400 users that this didn't work for them! I asked Rick for screen shots or an AppleSystemProfiler report but have not heard back yet? So please take this with a grain of salt :) [I used two 128mb cards from Advantage. You should be able to use any quality brand. Apple never certified 6400's for that much ram but they also didn't limit those machines either. If there were 256mb cards those would also work. I also have a Sonnet G3 card installed. But I can tell you that the machine performance really improved when I added the ram, previously I had two 64mb cards. The G3 card was added after the ram so I know that a standard machine will see the memory. I have installed 128mb cards in friends machines with no complications. Make sure your machine is well ventilated. Good Luck, Rick] The funny thing is that I did a search on Advantages web site and it only shows 136M ram as being the max. Go figure :) Voodoo5 drivers with a Voodoo3 and 4x4 EVO game: Recently I posted that the latest 1.1.0a V5 drivers worked fine with my V3 in my B&W G3. Well I guess I didn't play the 4x4 EVO Test2 then. I just tried last night and it locks up at a blank screen just after the initial menu selection. I went back to the Voodoo3 beta12 drivers and all is well. Mac Equipment for sale page updated: I added a few items to the list so you might want to go check it out. I have a few of my own stuff there as well :) 6400 Clocking page updated: Just a bit at least :) I changed the resistor chart to reflect speed gains for 6500 owners. The same procedure works for 6360, 5400/5500, and 6400/6500 systems. Not sure about clones based on the same mother board? 6500 CPU fan whining: Jay sent me a letter saying he swapped out his power supply fan to stop a whining noise he heard but it still continued. Turned out to be the little CPU fan on the CPU heatsink. Thanks Jay [Hi Tom, Thanks for the reference to your great site. I changed my cooling fan on my power supply only to realize it's the fan on my CPU that's making noise. I have a 6500/250. Do you know of any suppliers where I can get this item? I couldn't even open my system until I found your great instructions. Thank again, Jay] I suggest he try a local electronic store or Radio Shack to get a fan replacement. I'm pretty sure its a standard size fan as I was able to get a fan that fit perfect in my 6400 heat sink when I was clocking my CPU from a local electronic store. Also if you remove the fan you might try blasting compressed air in the fan motor area to try and clean it out. If that doesn't work then try a dab of 3in1 oil or a small shot of WD40. This may damage the fan if it gets to wet though so try at your own risk. www.sunrem.com is a good source of Mac parts and they should carry the fan if you cannot find them anywhere else.
