Just Updated 11/18/2000 Final update on 128M DIMMS in a 6400/6500, NO GO!: Daniel wrote before with some specs on how a 128M DIMM would need to be made for it to work on a 6400 with the full memory available. Last update I posted info from someone claiming to be using 2 128M cards in their 6400 but the person never wrote back? Well Daniel did some checking and found that there aren't any chips made by them with the correct configuration we need :( Thanks Daniel. [I saw the info on your web site recently about someone speaking he had broken the 136 Mb barrier. I sent you some message about the 128Mb limit of the 6400 a few months ago. Maybe you remember my Word doc at this time. I checked memory spec on the Advantage memory site. I compared the specs with my own information (the word document that I have sent to you), and obviously there is no memory with the good organization type. We need a chips type organized in 4X4, 2X8, or 1X16 addressing scheme. Unfortunately, it doesn't exist for a 128Mb DIMMs. Look in the sixth column in the advantage's web site and you will finally find why we can't add more memory to this machine. Higher density memories implicates to manage more bits with a higher bits count in the memory scheme. It's a little more technical in reality. Anyway a 128Mb Dimm with the right specs doesn't exist, had never existed and will never exists. Looking in the table on the web page will give you an idea. So unless Sonnet or Newer give us an G3 upgrade with memory on it or a special type of switching memory, we are stuck with 136 Mb :( Thanks! OSX server on a 5400!: I was given a link to a news group posting on OSX and found one post from a member named Josh that had actually installed OSX Server on a 5400! He had some trouble and had to use a special booter (which he cannot tell where it came from?) to get it working. This means it may be possible but someone is going to have to do some serious hacking around for us! [Thomas, Some years ago when I was working on Mac OS X Server, I experimented with a PM 5400. I was able to get it to install but had to use a booter that was derived from the MkLinux booter. Unfortunately the source can not be released. The main difficulty with PM 5400/6400 is Open Firmware booting. Someone will need get a working set of OF patches. Until then, there is little that can be done for these machines. Josh] OSX Beta Warning for 5500/6500 users!: I have had several emails from 6500 owners that tried OSX Beta on their systems and where unable to boot the system afterwards! This is the same issue I had with my 6400 but I was able to fix it by zapping the PRAM. This seems to not work on the 6500? In all cases they had to remove the mother board battery over night and then press the mother board reset button to things back to normal. Unless your sure you can live without your Mac or are a very brave person, I suggest not trying OSX beta on a 6400/6500 at the moment :( Hopefully things will change? I suspect his good performance is due to the 50Mhz system bus? Connectix really presses the issue that this product needs a fast system bus. I was able to play games on my 6400 with a 240Mhz G3 upgrade but it was not close to actual PS performance :( [Hi Tom, Just wanted to let you know how I am going with VGS 1.4.1 (full version - not demo) on my 5400 upgraded with a 5500 motherboard and Sonnet L2 G3 250/512 (Mac OS 8.6, 64meg RAM).. Generally I have been very impressed with performance ..I have tried demos of Gran Turismo 2, Sold Metal Gear, and the commercial version of Tomb Raider II. All of these titles have played close to the performance of a playstation...only occasional slow down at times when a new sound track is about to play etc..also in Tomb Raider II game froze at the very end of the first level. However, after pausing VGS, ejecting the CD, putting the CD back in and un-pausing VGS, the game continued. Also I should mention that a great site to go to for VGS info, reviews and saved memory card files is VGS Heaven (http://www.vgsheaven.com/). Regards, Justin] Info on running a DVD player through the ATI cards video in ports: An anonymous reader writes that he is unable to watch most DVD movies on his 6500 with a home DVD player attached to the video in on his ATI's TV/Tuner module. He wrote ATI about this to see if there will be any change later. [I was trying to watch a VHS tape from my TV system player through the ATI TV window on the PM6500. It was jumping and rolling. On a TV it was fine, so the ATI tuner must have a macrovision chip in it. Even my SIMA CopyMaster SED-CM box couldn't fix the picture on the ATI tuner (SVHS and composet was no better). Although this box will lets me copy DVD copy protected video onto VHS tapes. So something is preventing the copy protected videos to be viewed through the ATI TV tuner. This really rots since the option to view DVD movies on an older Mac by using an external DVD player though the ATI tuner does not work if the DVD is macrovisioned. I asked ATI what that was all about and if there was a fix for it. R.] I suspect ATI did this so you could not create any QT movies from copy protected DVD's? I don't see anyway around it at the moment unless ATI disables its QT capture from the video in ports when you want to watch a DVD movie. [Hey there, I would like to share with you my experience with my new 61.4GB IDE HD (more like 57.X GB if 1024k=1MB, nowadays, it's become the standard to show 1000k=MB, the OS doesn't know this, so it's tricky) that I installed onto my 6500/250. Anyway, I got the drive from e-bay, it's part of the new Maxtor DiamondPlus 80 series. My model number is 96147H6, just type that in and you get more info from their site. Anyway, it is 5400RPM and so quiet that you won't know the difference if it wasn't connected. The drive was set on master when I got it. I took out my old WD Caviar 4GB drive and swapped the brackets, connected it, turned on the computer. I booted with my OS CD. On startup it noticed the device and I initialized it with the Mac OS extended (HFS+) w/ 3 partitions. Switched back to my old HD, loaded up some files on to zips (2 zips to be exact). And after switched back and forth around 10+ times to get everything transferred, it worked beautifully. Oh by the way, this was probably like the 3rd time I have ever needed to use my useless zip drive :) in the past 4 years. My PC friends couldn't believe the simplicity, with a PC you have to hassle with DOS and lots of different drives, jumpers, etc. This shows you the simplicity of our machines. Also, removing the covers of the computer is effortless after you've done it more than 2 times or so. Anyway, so if there are any 64xx/65xx PowerMac users wondering if these huge drives will work, hell yeah they will work! By the way, I got it for $162 (including shipping) from ebay, I think his user id was "tbrooker" =) Alright guys, "later" -Anto] PC users do not have the simplicity of copying entire application suites or even System folders from HD to HD or computer to computer without having to reinstall most of the time. The reason is due to the System Registry which tracks a lot on how certain apps react to files on your HD. Without a normal install, the registry doesn't know that new apps are even there sometimes! Yamaha CDRW drive installed in stock CD's location: Roque writes that he was able to install a Yamaha CDRW in the stock CD's location with minimal customizing. I asked for more info and some pics if possible. Thanks Roque [I installed a Yamaha CDRW drive in the same location as my stock CD-ROM drive on my Performa 6400. Because the Yamaha drive tray has a trapezoid shape, I had to file a similar shape in the plastic of the inner face of the Performa front panel (about 1/8' of the upper left and right corners of the opening). Everything fit fine, but my stock internal SCSI bus was too flaky to work with the drive. I had to buy and install an Adaptec SCSI PCI card, and hook the drive SCSI cable to the internal card. It works fine, but I lost one of my two PCI slots.. Later, I put the old CD-ROM drive back in, and moved the CDRW into the upper expansion bay. I had to cut and file the upper face panel to fit the outside of the Yamaha drive. Both drives work just fine together. Apparently Apple must have never considered that we might install more HD's or partition the stock one. Bad Apple! Here is the info he found on how to get around this. Thanks Bill. [Thanks for reply Thomas. Yes have tried installer but no option to select installation disc is given. A ClubMac Australia member found the solution from the Apple TIL library. I did look but didn't find it myself so here is the answer to the problem. - - There are two methods that Apple recommend. 1) Transfer files from restore CD to desired disc after booting from restore CD. OR 2) Boot from restored disc and trash the mounted volumes you don't want the restore to go to. Since it will not see the trashed volumes the restore software will then go to the mounted volume. - Then of course remove the trashed volumes again from the trash.- Fairly obvious I suppose so I should have thought of it myself. {Tom - Actually you cannot remove unmounted volumes from the trash. You either have to reboot or use DriveSetup to mount the volumes again} I have posted this on the Macfixits site for all Performa users knowledge.
