My new hosting company, me!: Well now that I am on my new server, I can tell you about my new business. I am starting a web hosting company named TW Computing. The link is www.twcomputing.com. There is also an ad in the side bar.

The server is up and running and I am just waiting for my business license to go through before I can start accepting orders. Our service is geared toward personal and small business web site hosting. So if you know anyone interested in having a web site hosted that will be banner ad and pop ad free, please send them my way. Thanks :)

New features to my site: Now that I am on my own server, I can add a few features that I want to try. At the bottom of this page is a counter that I lost since I left AOL's service. Now its back, and its my own!

Shopping Cart - I implemented a shopping cart for ordering my archive CD's. You won't have to email me anymore. Sorry but I still only accept checks and money orders :( Soon I should be able to accept credit cards since I will have to get that service for my business!

Sherlock search engine - OSX Server has a built in website search feature that uses Sherlock. Its pretty plain but does the job. Try it below and tell me what you think?

I still need to add form handlers and maybe a few other cgi scripts that I can find but I am mostly finished setting up the server.

6400 IDE PCI card install instructions: I just added the IDE PCI card install instructions to my online manual. Click here to go check it out.

Issue with IDE CDROM on internal IDE bus: Will would like to know if anyone has tried to replace the IDE HD with an IDE CDROM and then install a SCSI HD in the upper bay and have everything work? It seems the CDROM causes problems being on the IDE bus. Please email me if you have any ideas for Will. Thanks.

[Hi Thomas,
Will here.

I have got a real good one for you, I think?

Have you heard of anyone changing the 6400 from an IDE drive to a SCSI drive?

Also have you heard of anyone installing an IDE Cd-rom from a G3 into the 6400?

The Cd-rom will start up just fine with a disc in it if you are starting from the cd-rom.

But if you start from the SCSI hard drive with the Cd-rom extention loaded, the finder will quit once it reaches the desktop. But the finder reloads itself. But the cd-rom is not excessible (sp). That is with cd-rom extension 5.0.4 and 5.4 I tried. For the original one loaded with OS 9.1 is the Cd-rom/DVD extension and this is what happens. The computer starts up but kicks open the cd-rom tray. You push it close and it reopens.

The cd-rom I am experimenting with is an OEM 24x from an AIO. The SCSI drive makes the 6400 faster than the IDE one.

Please advise.
There might need to be some sort of system hack needed to use the IDE cd-rom.

Thanks Will]

Booting from a SCSI drive is not to uncommon so there must be an issue with CDROM drives on the stock IDE bus? I am just guessing here but I think the problem is that the internal IDE bus may not be compatible with removable drives such as a CDROM? I say this because I remember there being similar issues with the first IDE PCI cards for Macs where removable drives would not work. It took a few revisions or firmware updates to make these cards work with CDROM drives. Maybe the IDE controller Apples used on the 6400 just doesn't support removable drives. This could explain why it works when a bootable CD is in the drive at boot time but it won't work other times. Bootable CD's have their own drivers on the CD so the computer can use that instead of loading one from the system folder.

Booting from a SCSI HD may cure some audio stuttering issues?: Jose wrote to say that he tried a suggestion that was posted on this site about booting to a SCSI HD instead of the IDE HD to fix audio stuttering issues. He tried this on a Beige G3 which was giving him problems and says it worked great! Thanks for the info Jose.

[I booted also from a scsi drive and my audio sync problems seemed to disappear I am so thankful I found your site to help me.]

So for those of you that have access to a SCSI HD and have audio stuttering issues, you may want to give this a try.

XPostFacto (OS X on Legacy Macs) v2.2b9 Update: This is a program that helps install OSX on older Macs that are not supposed to be OSX compatible. This latest update adds some support for our Macs. Here is a clipping from the read me.

[* Has some limited support for the 6400 and 6500. My 6500 still has problems with the SCSI bus, so booting from a CD does not work. So the 6400 and 6500 support is mostly for people who want to work on the problems, rather than the ordinary user. ]

Now don't all go out and try it right away! Not having SCSI support means you cannot install OSX from your CDROM drive. So unless you have another way to get the OSX install CD to run on your 6400/6500, I would not try this. Some suggestions that might work would be USB or firewire based CDROM drives. Even an IDE CDROM on a PCI IDE card might work?

More updates regarding my Evergreen Firewire/USB Combo Card: John wrote with some more info on his experience with the Evergreen combo card in his 6400. Thanks John.

[Hi Tom:
Seeing myself quoted on the front page of the 6400 zone, I thought I should provide another update... ;-)

As you may recall, I'm using my Evergreen Firewire/USB combo card in my (Newertech) G3-upgraded 6400 *running OS 8.6*. Most card makers highly recommend being at OS 9, and presumably only Apple's Firewire 2.3.3 works under 8.6 with these cards.

I'm using this card mostly to backup my machine to a 20 GByte Firelight portable firewire drive (a very cool device, IMHO). However, I have noticed that I have been getting some "freezes" on my system when backing up my disks. These "freezes" (the mouse would move, but you couldn't do anything) required unplugging my system to power it off and rebooting (the reset switch wouldn't even work). I first thought it might be speeddoubler, so I removed that (the Firelight drive comes with Connectix's "FastCopy" {Copy Agent -Tom} program which provides the same copy features as speeddoubler, along with "turbokeys") and initially things seemed to improve. But, I found that even using the copy function built into the OS, I would still get some freezes. However, I found that by disconnecting the firewire drive and then reconnecting it (kind of like the "headphone jack fix" for freezes caused by audio), the copy operation would resume.

I'm going to install OS 9 on my internal SCSI drive in the near future and see if I still have problems -- I'm suspicious that OS 8.6 just may not be able to support Firewire reliably, but I have been slow to upgrade for fear that some of my older apps might not work. But, now that I've got an internal SCSI drive (which I use for iTunes - as I also previously mentioned, this has virtually eliminated any of the audio freezing that I previously had), I can isolate the two OS's.

By the way, I haven't seen a response to my forum question about hooking up an iPod - how has your experience been?

6400 with Apple TV/FM installed on OS 9.1 and 9.2.1: Will is unable to change preferences on his Apple TV/FM system while running OS 9.1 and higher. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have a fix? Please email me with your comments. Thanks.

[Hi There!
Will Here, Nice Cd, Thanks!

I got a real bummer for ya.

This apple tv or tv/fm tuner software has got some real bugs in OS 9.1 and OS 9.2.1.

First off, I tried different hardware to make sure that was not the problem, threw out the prefs and even reloaded the software.

My problem is this, Under the tv tuner only in OS 9.1/9.2.1 you can not auto tune the stations.

This one really bites, using the tv/fm tuner under OS 9.1/9.2.1 you can not auto tune the tv stations. The fm side if you attempt to type in a station the fm quits just like that and then you hear the tv.

I loaded system from OS 7.6.1 to OS 8.6 and the software works fine! You have to save the prefs file, to place it in the OS 9.1/9.2.1 system prefs folder to have your stations preset. The tv tuner or tv/fm tuner works fine, but don't try to change anything in the OS 9.1/9.2.1 system.

Any suggestions?
I even have the latest apple scripts loaded.
Thanks, Will]

CD containing The 6400 Zone plus past history for sale 9/3/1999

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in purchasing a CD with my entire up-to-date site as well as my 6400 Take Apart Manual? Plus, many of the past Just Updates included! I think this would be a great idea for anyone who hasn't been able to keep up or never saw my site until recently. Also for those of you with Sherlock, the CD is even better cause you can tell Sherlock to index the CD and then you can do a search on any topic, and if I ever talked about it, you'll find it! I have info as far back as mid 1997. I'm asking $10 US which includes shipping, and I will even include a few surprises! To make this offer even juicier I can add some download that you've been trying to get but just couldn't for some reason. Lets put my cable modem to work :) I will accept money orders and personal checks but I won't mail out the CD till it clears.

amazon.com, books and more 7/2/98

I found a great way to earn some money while getting great deals to you on Macintosh books and software plus they have all kinds of other books, music, and more. Please click on the amazon.com link on the top of this page whenever you feel like purchasing something to help sponsor this site. If you're unsure of what you want and wish to get a list of Mac related items, just type Macintosh in the search field on their home page and you will be presented with many choices to select.

The 6400 Zone is created to help you gain access to useful software updates and great shareware programs that add functionality to your system. It is also a one stop road map to other informative sites for answering your questions. Most of the info here is geared towards the 6400, but it is useful for all PCI Performa models and even the 6500 and all-in-one Macs based on the same. It's even useful to other Mac systems. I will be referring to my 6400/200 clocked to 220Mhz as just 6400/220, OK.

I will keep it updated as often as I can but I don't have much free time to work on it, so I suggest you check back at least once every a week. That should be sufficient. If you don't see something you would like to see here or have your own software / web site that would benefit the Mac community, please write to me at zone6400@mac.com and I will check it out.

I use a Performa 6400/Vimage G3/320 OS 9.1, B&W G4/500 OS 9.2.1 with ASIP 6.3.3, B&W G4/500 OSX server 10.1.4, iBook Dual USB OS 9.2.2 / OSX 10.1.5, PM 6100 G3/240 OS 9.1, Dual G4 800 OS 9.2.2/OSX 10.1.5, and a PowerBook DUO 270c OS 7.5.5. If I encounter any problems, I will post them for all to read and respond to. Likewise, if you are having any problems and would like help just email me and if I can answer it I will, or I will post it here for others to read and respond to.

If any of the links do not work properly, please send an email to me the Site Master
