Dot Mac!: Well I hope you have all heard about Apples new Dot Mac (.Mac) plan. iTools was replaced by this. It's Apples version of Microsofts .Net plan. Apple will no longer be giving out free email and web space to people :( it will now cost $99 a year! This has many Mac users very angry with Apple at the moment. It was assumed that the mac.com email address and iDisk services would be free for life? Apple never actually said that but you sure thought they meant it. iTools is even listed as a feature on the OSX retail box! Doesn't that mean I paid for it already?

I have read much backlash towards Apple due to this and it's going to take some time for things to settle down :( It's to bad Apple didn't at least offer a reduced plan for email only accounts.

My new email address: Since Apple decided to charge for email, I had to make a decision on how I was going to get email for this web site. I could have paid Apple $49 for the first year and then $99 after that to keep the zone6400@mac.com, but I really didn't want to pay for email only. Specially at that price! So I figured out how to host my own mail server since I have the software already. Now I have a new address. It is thomas@zone6400.com. Please replace my zone6400@mac.com email with this new one because after September, my mac.com address will no longer function :(

Its going to take me some time to change this link on all of my sites pages so please be patient in the transition. I will be forwarding the zone6400@mac.com to my new thomas@zone6400.com address so I won't miss anybody :)

I will lose the auto replies also :( OSX Server does not have this feature and until I can figure out how to make one, I will just have to do without.

Sherlock search engine: Has anyone tried the new search feature using the Sherlock engine? I was wondering what you thought about it compared to the search engine I have been using for some time now from freefind.com. You can test the Sherlock engine again by using the entry form below. Sonnet Announced Temp Trio, a three-in-one card!: This is probably old news for some but at the last MacWorld Expo, Sonnet announced a three-in-one PCI card that has USB2, firewire, and ATA/133 ports! This is big news as this finally gives Mac users with limited PCI slots the ability to upgrade to all the latest ports with just one PCI card. Their press release is below.

Sonnet Tempo Trio. Why wasn't our Mac mentioned?: Some of you may have been asking this question as I was after reading that press release. Why not our Macs? The simple truth is that they where not tested by the time the press release was made. They even admitted the 6500 model should not have been listed on their website but they lucked out and it does work. The 6400 and 6500 models are support with the Tempo Trio. Here is a reply to a letter I sent Sonnet on this.

The Tempo Trio is compatible with the 6400 and 6500. They were omitted from the press release because we were still testing when it was published. However, as you probably know, it is quite a challenge to install PCI cards, etc. into these machines.

The mention of the 6500 on the Tempo Trio was actually an oversight that proved to be correct. We are in the process of altering all of our materials to include these two machines.

Sonnet Tempo Trio. Ok, so what about the 5400, 5500, 6360?: Support for these models gets a bit stickier. According to a Sonnet representative at MacWorld, these models have a wall between the PCI slots and the HD bay so there is no way to run the IDE cables to any drives. Looking at the 5400/5500 take apart manuals from Apple, it does appear to be true. The HD is under the mother board so to get a cable to it, you might be able to go through a hole in the back panel and then cut another hole in the back panel to access the HD? If anyone can verify this or has another solution, please email me. Thanks.

As for the 6360, I do not have that manual but I think the 6360 is similar to the performa 630 and that model also has a HD in a far location from the mother board. It may not be possible to run an IDE cable to that drive from a PCI card? If any 6360 users can help clarify this, please email me. Thanks.

Trying to get OSX installed on the 6400: I received a message from Dan who came up with a way that might work to get OSX installed on the 6400. Thanks Dan. The problem at this point is getting OSX installed without the CDROM since SCSI is not supported yet in XPostFacto on our Macs. Dan may have found the way.

[There is a way around this that should work. I've done this several times.

Make a 660 MB or so partition on your hard drive. Use Apple Software
Restore under OS 9 to copy the entire OS X install CD to that partition, and
then use XPostFacto to boot from that. This has the side benefit of making
the install go *much* faster than when booting from the stock S900 8X drive
- especially if you have a second physical drive to put the boot CD image
onto!

ATI Radeon 7000 PCI cards in our Macs: A few people wrote to say that this card does work on our Macs but no one said that they tried both monitor ports on the card at the same time? Bob wrote that he tried connecting a monitor on both the cards ports and it worked as expected! Thanks Bob. He also notes his audio issues are gone. Not sure which model Mac he has or if a L2 G3 is installed though? Maybe he will read this and reply back :)

After a 3 months wait I received my ATI RADEON 7000 Video card. Well,it's working as expected.(FINE !!!)
Tried with AppleVision 1710AV display on the card, no display attached to the Mac. Then an HP VGA 15 inch PC display on the card and the 17 inch AV on the Mac. All working as it should.
QuickTime 5 movies play now much better then before.
At this moment it's stable, with no troubles.
And now something special: There is no audio stuttering anymore, even without a CD in the CD-ROM player. GREAT !!!
If somebody as some questions about configurations are alike,ask me by way of forum or my E-mail. I'll answer as good and soon as I can.

Update on issue with IDE CDROM on internal IDE bus: Last update, Will wrote to say that he had issues with his CDROM being on the IDE bus and all the HD's being on the SCSI bus. Jeffrey replied saying he has had a similar setup for a few weeks now with no issues. Thanks Jeffrey.

[I had installed a 32x IDE CD-ROM (from my G4 Yikes as I upgrade to DVD), I extended the IDE Cable to the CD-ROM bay (removed the original SCSI connector), also extended the SCSI cable to the HDD bay. My system configuration as follow:

6400/200 upgrade to Sonnet G3 L2, 300/512
136MB RAM
Farallon 10/100 PCI Ethernet Card
IBM 9.1 Wide SCSI HDD (connect to the SCSI 2 via convertor, 68 to 50 pins, sync to SCSI 2) upper bay ID1
Seagate 9.1 SCSI 2 HDD, ID0
OS 8.6 on SCSI ID1 (2 Mac partition)
Apple CD-ROM driver 1.2.2
Yellow Dog Linux 2.3 on SCSI ID 0
Apple TV Tuner
2xUSB PCI (PC Card), USB driver 1.4.1 installed, Logitech wheel mouse.

I complete the installation about 3 weeks ago (installed YDL 2.3 on 8 Jul via the CD-ROM) I installed the Mac OS 8.6 after the change. Till now, it's working fine, no problem for sound and also the VCD. I can't get the YDL running with G3 L2 loaded.

If I have time, I will take some photograph for the reader. Feel free to contact me if you required more information.

I wonder if the CDROM drive Will is using is bad? Both Will's and Jeffrey's where OEM Apple drives. Jeffrey sent me a picture of the cabling he had to do to get his setup working. The red line shows the path of the IDE cable being attached to an extender cable and going to the IDE CDROM. The green line shows the SCSI cable having an extender cable attached just below the old SCSI CDROM plug and then going to a SCSI HD in the stock location and another SCSI drive attached in the upper bay. Thanks Jeffrey. Sorry its so hard to see but there are just to many cables bunched up inside the 6400.

Update on 6400 with Apple TV/FM installed on OS 9.1 and 9.2.1: Last update, Will also had an issue with his Apple TV/FM system not being able to auto tune stations after OS 9.1 was installed. Petar wrote to say that he fixed this by starting fresh and then it worked. I think he means he ran the system restore CD and upgraded from there? Thanks Petar.

[I have also had this problem on my 6360. The fix actually for what it is worth on my 6360 was to let the installer install everything it wanted to... When I did a custom install then the Video Player software would not work correctly and the sound preferences would be all screwed up.

I just reloaded from stock AGAIN and all was well. On my 6300 however I did the same more or less custom install (Minimum plus a few extras)and the problem did not appear...

Just thought I would pass that along. We are not alone in this weird OS 9.1 TV tuner issue.

[Same thing happened to me. I could not use the auto tuner I had to manually add all of the TV stations, a real drag. I gave up all hope and just went back to using MacOS 8.6, my 6500 is happy again.
