With an external floppy drive.

The Macintosh 512Ke can support only the HD20 hard drive directly. Third-party companies have created a SCSI add on board which will complete the transformation of the Macintosh 512Ke to a Macintosh Plus. The other way was to obtain an Apple upgrade kit which consisted of the Macintosh Plus logic board and new case (the back part only.) The motherboard is the same as the Macintosh 128K & Macintosh 512K, the memory chips are soldered on with no expansion capability.

The Macintosh 512Ke is used today yet for word processing, spreadsheets, telecommunications and the like. Third-party companies made a 4MB of memory upgrade (hard to find there nowadays) is enough to do meaningful tasks yet today! Even 512K is enough.

The only problem is you actually have less than 512K of RAM to use for applications than the Mac 512K. The 128K ROMS added extra stuff to put in memory upon boot up time. This won't keep you from working with the Mac 512Ke, just be aware that if you run of memory sooner, this is why.

Apple's recommended System Software version: System 4.1 / Finder 5.5 (System Software 2.0.1)

For AppleShare use: System 3.3 and Finder 5.5 are installed by the AppleShare 1.1 Work Station Installer disk; System 3.4 and Finder 6.1 are installed by the AppleShare 2.0 Macintosh 512KE Work Station Installer disk. This machine can not be used as an AppleShare file server. If you have AppleShare 2.x the Mac 512Ke can become a printer server.

Below the software chart shows that the Macintosh 512K has a n/a for the AppleTalk Version. The Macintosh 512Ke can in fact support the AppleTalk network.

For telecommunications use: Can use 9600 baud modem or lower, anything higher may cause problems. Stock Macintosh cannot be placed on the Internet, Internet needs 4MB of RAM, possible with a memory upgrade.

Hard Drive use: Can use the Apple's HD20 - plugs into the floppy port. Or use any third-party hard drive which plugs into the modem port. Stock Macintosh 512Ke cannot use any SCSI hard drive.
