Macintosh Classic II (Performa 200)

The successor to the Mac SE/30!
• Hmmm...
Close up of Classic II
The Macintosh Classic II. It had the same design as the Macintosh Classic. A bit more powerful.

The back of the Macintosh Classic II, plus the keyboard. It looks cooler than the original keyboard on the Mac Plus or Mac SE

The Mac Classic II (aka Performa 200) was not a bad computer. It was faster than any other Classic Mac except for the Mac SE/30. The Mac SE/30 was discontinued in 1990 leaving a bit gap as people still wanted the Classic design. The Classic II was a tad slower than the Mac SE/30, 20% - 30% slower, why? The data path was only a 16-bit path while the SE/30 had a 32-bit data path.

This Macintosh included a Omni-directional microphone This let you record sound into the Mac! Cool! There were third party Mac sound recorders before, but now everyone can do it free. More software came out which utilized this, FullWrite Professional was one application which used the recorded sound seriously.

Mac Classic II Here is a good picture of the Mac Classic II with the microphone.

For AppleShare use: Use System 7.x or higher as an AppleShare workstation. This machine can be used as an AppleShare file server.

For telecommunications use: Can use 9600 baud modem or lower, anything higher may cause problems. Stock Macintosh Classic II can be placed on the Internet, with at least 4MB of RAM.

Hard Drive use: Cannot use the Apple's HD20!! Stock Macintosh Classic II can use any SCSI hard drive (25 pin port on back). SCSI only - Use a 1:1 interleave.

Color use:
• Aura Systems created an external box which outputted color from a Macintosh Color Classic II. I looked into this at one point, very expensive, about $2500.
• Radius has a device which will only work on the Classic II, PowerBook 140 & 170. It it similar tot he Aura systems. Picture here
• The Classic II supports Color QuickDraw internally on it's B/W Screen. It can get ugly though.
