Mac OS X elves??

I have made the discovery of a lifetime! I now know who made parts of Mac OS X! Elves!

Before you lock me away, I have proof! But I must tell you my story...

My story

It started back on March 24th, 2001.

I was looking around after the installation of Mac OS X for some cool cocoa-ized applications to play around with. I downloaded iTunes and AppleWorks 6.1. Messed with Chess and Liquid Button Maker. And I stumbled with a folder I had never seen before. Developer?

Oh yea that is right, I installed the Developer Tools CD. The Developer folder did not appear right away after I installed it so I proceeded to adventure onward into other Mac OS X tasks. I journeyed into the realm of Mail and fell in love with it. The task of converting messages from that rogue app Outlook Express was interesting. To the rescue was a Mail Import AppleScript utility. (For more information on it look at our Mail report.) This utility rode in on a white stallion. Fixed the problem (it took him three times) and away he went to help another soul like mine. No more will Outlook Express spoil my day.

Where was I, oh... yes, Developer folder. I peeked inside to see what I was missing. I saw nestled folders waiting for someone to venture forth. I sneaked further in, avoiding any traps or alarms waiting to spring to life. Once I got closer I heard applications talking and discussing something interesting. Darn it, the folder's walls were too thick for me to hear exactly what they were saying. So I crept in a bit to take a little look.

I saw a few old friends; Interface Builder and Project Builder! I opened the folder and gave a big, "Hello!" The applications responded with all sorts of pleasantries. The applications shared a few stories of their own and adventures. It was along time as I was a late bloomer in the NeXT world. I purchased a used NeXT Station system last year and had a wonderful time getting it up to par with the many applications and other system enhancements which fixed that Y2K dragon, which was only a small bug in disguise. NeXTStep is a cool OS. Macintoshes System is a cool OS as well.

We sang, drank, danced and had a merry ole time. I enjoyed being back among friends. This Mac OS X experience was quite a trip for an old Macster as I. You see back in 1985 I started in this journey called Macintosh. After trying a few other GUI OSes (Windows 386, OS/2, Atari ST (GEM), and the Amiga) nothing came close to the elegance of Macintosh.

When things quieted down a bit. I noticed a fellow application as small as can be. I talked to this app to find more about him. What this app said was quite a mouthful. Let me show you...

Indeed! We all should Install Different. With Mac OS X we can! Elves create the magic of Mac OS X! What a great discovery.

(I wish to thank The Apple Mac OS X Installer Elves for inspiring me to write this silly story.)
