The Mac SE/30 was one of the greatest Macs ever made! This Mac provided the power of the Mac IIx & IIcx, in a small footprint. A bit slower in actual testing, but it was the main Mac for the people who liked the Classic look. The added FPU crunched through numbers faster than any other Classic Mac.
This Mac allowed you to upgrade its memory with 8 SIMM sockets, utilizing 4MB SIMMs! Some have expanded their Mac SE/30s to 128MB of RAM, it is possible using16MB SIMMs.
A big plus is the capability of adding a color monitor card into its expansion slot. This 030 Direct Slot is different from the Mac SE's expansion slot, it has 120 pins. It provides the necessary room to access the 68030 directly. Should I add an Ethernet card or a color video card...? I know my answer!
This Mac has dirty Roms! Bad Mac! Seriously this prevented the Mac SE/30 to only 8MB of memory. Hello! Thankfully Connectix came out with Mode 32 and fixed this problem with software. Apple also came out with an extension called the 32-bit Enabler, I don't recall which came first.
For AppleShare use: Use at least System 6.0.3 and Finder 6.1 when installing from the AppleShare Client 6.x Installer disk. Update your System configuration, not replace. This machine can be used as an AppleShare file server.
For telecommunications use: Can use 9600 baud modem or lower, anything higher may cause problems. Stock Macintosh Plus can be placed on the Internet, with maxed 4MB of RAM memory upgrade.
Hard Drive use: Cannot use the Apple's HD20!! Stock Macintosh SE/30 can use any SCSI hard drive (25 pin port on back). SCSI only - Use a 1:1 interleave.
Color use: The Macintosh SE/30 can support Color provided you use a monitor card in the PDS slot - Plus Micron came out with the Xceed card which let the internal monitor display greys, instead of B/W dithering on a stock Macinotsh SE/30.
