The 6400 Zone is created to help you gain access to useful software updates and great shareware programs that add functionality to your system. It is also a one stop road map to other informative sites for answering your questions. Most of the info here is geared towards the 6400, but it is useful for all PCI Performa models and even the 6500 and all-in-one Macs based on the same. It's even useful to other MAC systems. I will be referring to my 6400/200 clocked to 220Mhz as just 6400/220, OK.
I will keep it updated as often as I can but I don't have much free time to work on it, so I suggest you check back at least once a week. That should be sufficient. If you don't see something you would like to see here or have your own software / web site that would benefit the MAC community, please write to me at TMK12v@aol.com and I will check it out.

Just Updated 8/20/1999
Mouse Freeze update: I just moved my USB card to the Sonnet upgraded 6400 along with my Voodoo2 card to see if I would still get the mouse freezes. It appears to be OK on this system so maybe it was the PCI chassi bandwidth causing my problems? I am not using the mouse drivers right now so the extra button features don't work. I am testing one step at a time to see what might have been causing the freezes.
Loud Power supply issue update: Well I tried cleaning my power supply out and didn't find much dust at all. It stayed quieter for a day or so but I didn't do any hard work. Finally I had added my Voodoo2 card to this Mac and boy that did it. My fan started humming very loud again as soon as any game using the card started. It would slow down after quitting the game but it was just horribly loud still! I gave up and bought a new fan from KIWI and boy what a difference!!!!!
KIWI told me this power supply came from a 6500 and it is much quieter! I was supprised that the output wattage was still only 150W just like the 6400 but KIWI said this is true of all the 6500's? I wonder if any 6500 owners could let me know what the rating is on their power supplies? If you feel like checking :) I checked several other web sites and they listed it as 150W also but Apples manual and online spec's say both the 6400 and 6500 are 220W supplies? Now thats confusing! infact the Take Apart Manual actually says the 6400 is 220W and the 6500 is 140W ?????
Anyways this new supply is awsome and I might just buy another one for my other 6400 :) KIWI's phone number is on my Magazines page. Sorry no web site yet.
But why not try cleaning first if you have the time. I received a few letters from people saying it is helping in their case. Good to hear!
[Tom,
Thanks for posting the item about cleaning the power supply on
the 6400. After reading that, I cracked open my 6400 and used
an air can to remove a LOT of dust (2 and a half years worth)
from the power supply fan. Now Metronome reports that my Sonnet
300/1MB card runs at a steady 39 degrees celsius as opposed to
the steady 43 degrees celsius that it ran at prior to the cleaning.
It is also much quieter and steadier sounding.
Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Voodoo3 issues with G3 upgraded 6400/6500 MACs: I feel like the 6400 era is coming to an end :( Not only was the latest greatest ATI Rage 128 not compatible at the moment but either is the Voodoo3 card from 3dfx!
Now I hear it does work with the G3's disabled but you have to disable 2D acceleration with Sonnets G3 and Vimages just plain doesn't work so far! The following are some letters I have received on this topic. Thanks guys. Click here to read more on the Voodoo3 card.
[Hi Tom,
I've just visited your site (a link from AccelerateyourMac!) and
have found that you posted my tips for getting stability for 6500
owners with G3 and V3. I just want to let you know that I was
able to get that kind of stability for only the first day. After
that, my 6500 has been very unstable. Startups are always fine,
but I can use my Mac for only a few minutes (5 max!) before it
totally freezes. I've tried many, many things and even workarounds
suggested by other 6500 users at Mac3dfx.com but I still have
that stability problem. One thing I am sure of is that whenever
I have the 3dfx Hardware Resource Mgr and the (Sonnet's) Crescendo
1.3.7 extensions enabled at the same time, there will be freezes.
If either one is not enabled at the same time, I have no problems,
but then performance will suffer. Since there are many others
who have been successful in getting their G3 upgraded Macs (err...
not our upgrade-challenged models) to run with V3, I've come to
the conclusion (though I may be wrong) that there may be incompatibilities
with the above mentioned extensions. I have e-mailed Sonnet to
ask them to look into it. Maybe it has something to do with our
G3s in the L2 slot? I really don't know. But please caution your
readers that they may still want to wait before upgrading to V3.
V2 rocks though! : )

[I have a PowerMac 6500/250 upgraded with a Vimage PF G3/240(225 in 6500) card. Also, installed is a v3 2000 3dfx card and Mac OS 8.5.1. I am experiencing the 1" white square block during startup, however, it doesn't go away! Once the extension is reached, the square shows up and I hear my computer continue to load and then stop as if it finished but nothing shows up. No picture, no background, no nada! This forces a reboot disabling the G3 extension! Any ideas on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.]
On a side note, the Voodoo2 card from 3dfx runs just fine on my 6400. Even being almost 2" over the 6400's PCI length spec is ok. I have the passthru connected to the stock monitor port so I don't have any 2D acceleration which is what the Voodoo3 is great for but I do get to play Quake2 and Quake3 plus Unreal in all their glory with good frame rates. And it works with both Vimages and Sonnets G3's. Remember though that in order to play most of these games you really need a G3 and lots of RAM! my 6400 with 136M of RAM was not an issue but my other only having 56M was not enough. I had to use RamDoubler to increase it to 140M untill I stopped getting Mesa3dfxEngine out of memory errors! Well when Unreal demands 90+ megs what do you expect! I wouldn't waste your money on these high end cards unless you plan on upgrading the rest of your system too.
Craig got his Voodoo3 to work finally: Craig email me last week saying that his Voodoo3 card seemed to almost ruin his mother board! He was having some weird PCI issues but it has all cleared up now. I don't think he has a G3 upgrade, or at least he never mentioned it.
[I want to thank you for posting my request for help on my new
Voodoo3 card. It now works with no problems. I can't identify
what the problem was or what I did that corrected it but it is
now running smoothly. Very weird. I removed the card and tried
to get System Profiler to recognize the EMPTY PCI slot with no
luck. Now I began to worry that I might have zapped the circuits
during my troubleshooting (static discharge). I replaced the Voodoo
card once again and still couldn't get the computer to identify
the slot or the card. The last thing I did was to download a copy
of PCI Prober from the Pure Mac site. After running this, the
card was recognized by both PCI Prober and Apple System Profiler.
The card has been working well with my 6500 ever since. I don't
know if it was the software that activated the slot or if the
card finally seated or if the planets finally aligned just right
but I now have a working Voodoo3 2000 card in my 6500.
Thanks,
Craig]
Newers L2 G3's may be incompatible with the Geo modem: This doesn't supprise me. I just got this letter from Nicholas who cannot get a reliable connection to the internet with the G3 enabled :( Here is his letter. Thanks.
[Dear Tom
I've spent a useful few minutes browsing through several pages
of
the 6400 Zone.
On one page concerned with the GeoPort modems one item appeared
(4/17/1999) concerning 5400s and potential conflicts with the
MAXpowr G3-L2 upgrade cards. I have just installed a 300/200 card
and have had endless problems with my GeoPort modem ever since.
About 1% of attempts in resetting the preferences for Apple Phone
succeed and the modem works but the rest of the time the modem
isn't recognized. The Apple Telecom software is apparently installed
properly, the GeoPort modem is seated properly and the cables
are fine. Has anyone else had the same problem ? Is there a way
out without removing the processor upgrade and slowing down again?
Yours
Nicholas]
[Dear Tom
Many thanks for your response.
Your reference to the 5400 was on your GeoPort modem pages, although
I've been unable to check exactly where as I couldn't get into
your site this morning.
I have since had a somewhat strange reply from Newer Technology.
It reads as follows:
'Since libmoto is not need [sic!] in your system folder I would
temporarily disable it to see if libmoto is the cause. You can
disable the MaxPowr extension and that should turn the G3 upgrade
off if you need to test it without the card.'
This is rather interesting; the minimal Readme that comes from
Newer with the card suggests LibmotoSh should be installed for
Os before 8.1 and as I have 8.0 I duly loaded it. Disabling its
extension still didn't free up the GeoPort modem. Conclusion:
Libmoto is unlikely to be the conflicting software.
Turning of the MaxPowr extension had interesting results. On restart
my machine predictably ran at snails pace as it was lacking the
L2 backside cache. The modem - worked perfectly, even if downloads
were a little slow. Turning on the MaxPowr extension again cause
major problems with the modem which remained unchanged when turning
on LibmotoSh. When turning off my machine however there were some
major problems with the catalogue b tree which had to be fixed
with a combination of Disk First Aid and Norton Utilities. These
'b tree' problems have turned out to be common and occured following
initial installation of the card and after subsequent problems
with trying to get the modem to work. Conclusion: that the MaxPowr
extension (and possibly the G3-L2 card) causes a serious conflict
with the GeoPort modem; the catalogue b tree problems may be caused
as a result of this conflict.
I'm going to pass on this information to Newer and see what their
response is. I'll keep you informed.
Yours

[Dear Tom
The comment from the technical department of Newer Technology
is rather interesting. They seem prepared to have the part returned
and replaced judging by the latest e-mail I've had:

The interesting point is that they haven't really answered some
of my initial questions over extension conflicts etc. ,or whether
other modems are known to work.
I still feel it might be worth highlighting the problem as it
may be a with just a few cards .......?

I hope it was just a defective card. I guess we'll find out in a little while. Click here to read more on Newers L2 G3's.
More Newer G3 user letters: This comes from Claudio who just purchesed one and is having a little issue with Apples speech recognition software.
[Tom :
Hi ; is been a while since I wrote you ; I was to sell my Performa
6400/200 some time ago but I had a change of heart and decided
to keep it as a backup computer for the house , I always liked
it ...now ; I was using the Vimage 240 mhz/160 card ( I was perhaps
one of the very first ones to buy it) and I was pleased what the
improvement that it brought into the performance of my machine. Now
almost and year later I decided to purchase the Newer's 300/200
1 MB L2 cache since the prize has gone down so much and to experiment
with it too ....Here are some of my problems first .... The "voice
recognition feature is quirky at times ... u have to actually
re-start "speakable items" or push "the set key ..Esc." in between
voice commands. With the Vimage card this was not a problem ...
This only happens when I use the Internet ... meaning that the
modem( Apple/Global Village Internal 56 k V90 upgrade) is working
on the background. TechTool Version 2.5 crashes when rebuilding
the desktop only... all other utilities of the program work fine.
And also the sound of any playtrough Internet related subject;
lets say Quicktime streaming or any sound is somehow not completely
clear at times Now ; the good news is that is a fast and reliable
product ; it has brought my processor speed using MacBench 5 to
= 1020 ;FPU = 1270 (using LibMotto) and Disk= 1458( I changed
the original disk with a Fireball Ultra ATA at 7200 rpm ( it was
worth the 189 dollars ).I still think that due to the limit on
the bus speed of the 6400 ; I am not getting the desire " feel
" of a new generation Mac ..lets say the iMac ...but for an aging
machine like this one ..this card is bringing another 6 or so
months lease until the G4's are out ... If you know more about
the "sound" and voice recognition issues on the Newer's card I
would appreciate the input ... Thank you and I enjoy your site
a lot ...

Farallons Comm II slot driver may work with OS 8.6 after all?: I just received this from Sheldon who said he found that removing ATI's extensions kept the crash at shutdown from happening with Farallons 2.0 driver. I'll have to try for my self. Thanks.
[Hello!
I was just reading through your site when I noticed that there
was confirmation with the Comm slot 2 vers 2.0 driver and 8.6
problem a reader reported.
Well, I've got the Farallon Comm slot 2 card-8.6 and I noticed
something that might be very helpful.
I just installed the Voodoo3 card and I trashed every single ATI
extension. Cable modem no longer hangs at reboot, restart,3 -finger
start. I can shut-down, restart without any problems.
6500/250
I purchased an Orion card that is still sitting on the shelf =(.
Voodoo3 runs the same as a Voodoo2 for 3d in my system, same FPS
with either card. The advantage is the 2d with the V3 card. Very
nice indeed =).
No QT accel though.
The fix is complete for the ATI Orion card and the 603e CPU and
should be posted soon according to Chris Bentley- ATI, Mike Breeden-xlr8.
IMO. the Rage 128 and a Voodoo2 would be the perfect set-up for
the 54-64-6500 systems. Although it will be a tough decision to
pull out the Voodoo3 board =).We'll see how the Orion performs
when the fix is posted. I will also keep an eye on the ATI vers
4.0 extensions to see if they are compatible with the Comm slot
2 card.
Thank-you for your time
Sheldon]
I hope his comments on the ATI rage128 drivers are true? many 6400/6500 users will be happy with that.
More Sonnet G3 and Sound apps info from Egan: Egan sent some more info on sound apps with relation to Sonnets G3's Thanks Egan. Click here to read previous letters Egan wrote to me.
[Tom,
Just read the latest on the 6400 Zone. Some people are getting
HELP from my postings,e-mail, advice, etc. COOL MAN! It's so nice
to help people. Makes me feel like a Million Bucks, and again
LOVE the site!
A Freind, Kelly was explaining how aweful upgrading her 9500 is...and
she has a 6500 also. I mentioned cheap Maxtor 7200rpm 20 Gig (ATA)
HD's for under $300 at Comp USA & G3 upgrades (she could do without
paying for HELP-it a mess in those things!) So, I gave her your
URL- for complete directions! Thanks for just being here Tom!
BLESS YOU! Pictures even!!!!
Update;
I am no longer getting even boot crashes. Everything is humming
along perfectly.
-StudioVision Pro/VisionDSP issues;
I was noting many 6400 users on VisionDSP's user mailing list
& issues with sound/recording errors. The ASIO Drivers & ACADIA
(also throw out the generic Acadia engine-and use the custom 603/G3
Acadia engine!) engine stay in the ASIO folder in the Vision DSP
Folder, as does Acadia. You may wonder what's so confusing about
that? Well if you double click them they say they are Extensions
"Please put in the Extensions folder to enhance your computers
abilities"- BUT DONT! So, I have been a big hit with users complaining
about recording errors up the wazoo. (on any/all systems)
-Also, tried your Hack Tom, Speculative addressing is what makes
a G3 so responsive-interesting! This only caused more crashes,
BUT as long as it was installed I set my Sonnet 300/1MB to 3:2
Ratio and CPU hit 1015 on MB 5.0! (from 980 @ 2:1) (!) However;
I had conflicts with the whole thing & uninstalled it.
Bottom Line- Steinberg (CubaseVST etc.) does not "Support" any
upgrades except Newer (although I am unsure of L2 cache & 6400's).
However; this is strictly that they dont want to have to troubleshoot
all these systems (Steinberg also does not "Support" CLONES) but
the Upgrades & the Clones all run Cubase & similiar products every
day. (Like the writer at www.XLR8YourMac.com/Audio, in his FAQ says- If you upgrade- be prepared to troubleshoot
yourself!) I recommend a read of that FAQ to any Audio people
also!
Sincerely,
Egan
P.S. My 6400 shipped with a GV Platinum. I keep hearing Geoport
Modem being stock in 6400's! - Is that aweful thing really the
most common Modem that shipped with the 6400??? (It's all software
(the Modem) I believe (or mostly) -and uses....20% of the CPU
to connect , which sounds just AWEFUL! Considering what a HOG
Netscape is already!)]
The hack doesn't seem to work for everyone but I guess each systems situation is different. I had to start using the Hack again after installing the Voodoo2 card. I was getting some stability issues again so I rehacked the Crescendo 1.3.7 driver. I am stable again.

Professional Audio recording on the 6400: For those of you in the field of Audio Recording and are having trouble you can write to Egan who sent me some wonderfull info on Audio recording on a G3 accelerated 6400. Please try to limit your questions to Audio issues only as like most of us he is a pretty busy guy. Thanks Egan.
Another G3 accelerated 6400 that refuses to stay G3 accelerated after a bad crash!: Steve was a happy camper until he had a serious crash and now his Sonnet G3 refuses to work. Did it fry? Please email any suggestions you may have. Thanks. I have had only one other person write to me with similar issues but his is with both Vimages and Sonnets G3's!
[I recieved my sonnet card on monday and was talking it up all
week to my friends. I have probibly talked three other people
into buying upgrades for thier machines. Unfortunately at about
noon saturday I think I may have fried the card. I was using a
digital camcorder to document how fast different programs like
adobe illustrater and photoshop open. I have no firewire port,
and do have an XclaimVR ragepro4M so used the svideo out on the
camera to the svideo in on the Xclaim card. I have done this quite
a few times but hadn't tried it since uprgading the proccesser.
To do the test I made a duplicate of the extention set I had been
using all week for my online needs and disabled the crescendo
extention. I first did the tests with the upgrade, then without,
finally doing a few more with the upgrade. So I started the computer
using my original extention set, then the dupe w/out the crescendo
ext., then the original again. After I stopped filming the tests
I opened up Xclaim video player to turn the DV I had taken into
movie files. My computer locked up hard. cmnd-opt-esc did nothing.
cmnd-ctrl-pwr to reboot. Computer started to function normally,
loading the ATI drivers but again locked up hard right at the
point the crescendo ext loads. Did a cmnd-ctrl-pwr to try and
restart w/no extentions. The computer acted like it was rebooting
but did not chime. After that the moniter switched from standby
to ready and then back to standby where the computer locks up
really hard. I am forced to turn my power strip off and on again
to get the computer to boot again. I think the card is fried.
I have tried every possible combination of fixes to no avail.
I have tried removing the video card, reseating the upgrade card
and resetting the cuda switch, disconnecting my SCSI stuff, reinstalling
the software, rebuilding the desktop, starting with only minimal
extentions plus the crescendo extention.
What do you think,
Steve]
Before I could get this page posted I got a reply from Steve saying he got a new card and all is well. Cool!
[Mac Zone is awesome! As I said in my last email, I was certain that the 300/512 card I had was fried. To add insult to injury, less than 24 hours after I had ordered my upgrade, Sonnet dropped the prices $100. Mac Zone was kind enough to give me a full refund (except the shipping to me, but they paid to pick it up) and was able to order the 300/1M for $6 more than I paid for the 300/512. Of course about the same time I ordered the new processor, Newer dropped thier prices in line with Sonnet's. So it goes. Got it yesterday with no real problems so far. I was experiencing some crashes on startup, but adding a '~' and putting it in the control panels folder seems to have eliminated the problem. I was able to input video using Xclaim video player (the app that fried the last processor) although I did experience the only crash so far using it. Actually it locked up while recording. However, this could have happened at any time with or without the upgrade. Overall, I'm very happy with it. That could change at any time.]
Loud power supply got you down?: Rodney has been having a serious issue with his power supply where the fan would spin up and down making an anoyingly loud sound. Trust me I have this smae problem and it sounds like a turbo jet taking off :) Anyway he found that by removing the power supply and using a can of compressed air to blow off the dust fixed it! I just tried myself last night and so far mine is quieter too but not as quiet as his sounds. I didn't have much dust at all so my supply may be just going bad? I will have instructions on doing this as soon as my pictures develop. Thanks Rodney. Click here to read previous info I had on this issue.
[Tom,
Good news. You will want to post this on your page. Tell EVERYONE
to clean their power supply. :-) I finally took the case apart
and removed the power supply. Actually, I could not get the power
cables disconnected for some strange reason. Anyway, I removed
it and took it out as far as the cables would allow. I then sprayed
compressed air (2 full cans) into the case. I must've blown out
0.25 pounds of dust.I then took the cover off of the power supply
and wiped the fan blades off, blew air on them, etc. All I can
say is WOW!!! Let me say it again. WOW!!!!!!!!!! Super quiet machine
again. It's been on since 2:30 this afternoon (it is now 9:40
p.m. Sunday here in America) and it hasn't revved up one octave
higher. Same air conditioning settings are on in the house. Same
computer location. Yet, the machine is deadly silent. I now have
to put my ear to the case to hear the noise from the fan. From
a distance of 6 feet away, and with a tv on, I can no longer hear
the fan at all. The best thing though is the lack of the increasing
pitch of the fan spinning up and down. It's just one consistent
hum now. No oscillating at all. None!! I may have even saved my
power supply from an early death. I have no doubt that it was
overheating with all that caked up dust on it. It's the kind of
dust that was loose but then it had another layer on it that was
sticky (like some type of spindle oil from the fan had mixed with
the dust particles or something. Even the air coming out the back
of the 6400 is cooler now.
Anyway, I wanted to share that with you and your web page visitors.
My next mission is to remove the 256K L2 cache and plug a 1MB
L2 cache in there. No more thoughts of G3 upgrade cards for me.

8/1/1999 ATI response to Rage128 and 6400 issue: I found this on Accelerate Your Mac. It seems that ATI had it working at one time but did not check again when some last minute changes were made. The good news is that it can work and they just need to update the drivers.
[ATI Responds to Rage128 Compatibility Issues: As promised earlier
today - here is ATI's reply to my question on the issues noted
here recently:
"Mike
It looks like the common denominator is a 603e processor. At headquarters,
they are working on a fix. I should know more sometime next week.
QA _did_ test some of these models successfully, but apparently
they didn't retest after some of the latest changes. So the good
news is that there doesn't appear to be any hardware incompatibility.

I got this from MacInTouch. I hope its to make the drivers work with ALL systems.
[Another reader notes that he was told by an ATI sales representative that delivery of the XclaimVR 128 card has now slipped to September, and wonders if there are any similar cards from alternative vendors that are shipping now. ]
7/30/1999 ATI Rage 128 Orion not compatible with 6400!: I just heard that ATI's new Orion card is not compatible with the 6400/6500 or StarMax systems. This probably means its also not compatible with any Mac designed with the same mother boards. The ATI extension that activates the 3D hardware crashes during boot. With out it, it seems to run ok but with no Acceleration for games. Not sure if the 2D is still accelerated or not. ATI is aware of the issue and working on it.
I sure hope so as it took them a year just to release the cards and their reason was to make sure they were compatible. WHAT HAPPENED?

Freeze at shutdown with Farallons COMM II ethernet card and OS 8.67/10/1999
When I first installed the cable modem I got some crashes when I shut down. I traced it to Farallons COMM II ethernet extension version 2.0. With version 1.1 the 6400 shuts down fine. I emailed Farallon and am waiting for a reply.
UPDATE on Farallons 2.0 extension for their 10/100 COMM II ethernet card not compatible with OS 8.6: Paul emailed saying he had the same problem but it may not have been the Farallon extension causing the problem. All I know is that when I reinstall the older 1.1 version the problem goes away. Thanks Paul.
[I had this same problem when I first installed 8.6. I e-mailed
Farallon and got a response that said they had not seen this problem
before. I managed to resolve the freezes and it was not due to
the Farallon 2.0 extension. I think it was BeHierarchic (3.1.1)
that was the offending control panel but I honestly can not remember
what I had to do to fix it. I have been racking my brain all day
trying to remember the fix. If I do remember I'll post ASAP

My own request 7/10/1999
This is somewhat off the topic but I was wondering if there is anyone using Quicken to do online billing with their bank? I use Bank of America and the branches out here are not as up-to-date as the California system is so they have no Mac versions of their software used to do online billing. They just switched to Quicken99 from Managing Your Money and they only have PC versions available. I was wondering if Quicken98 for the Mac would work? I expecct that when Quicken 2000 comes out for the Mac then they should distribute both PC and Mac copies for online banking. Anyways if anyone has an answer then please email me. Thanks.
update: It won't work. I just called Bank of America and it seems at the time they were deciding on which software to choose Q98 was not Y2K so out it went. It is Y2K now if you update to revision5 but its too late for BofA. Maybe Q2000 will be chosen?
