Tango Firmware Patch v1.2: Sonnet released the Tango 1.1 firmware patch and then a few days later released this 1.2 version. Below is what is updated. Please email me if this patch fixes any audio issues you have. Thanks.

Version 1.2 resolves issues that prevented the software from updating the Tango card's serial ROM under some circumstances. OrangeLink FireWire/USB2 card not immune to audio issues with a G3 card installed: Kev wrote back to let me know his Sonnet G3 showed up and he then got audio stuttering like everybody else. Sigh! Thanks for the info Kev.

[I'm going to leave the long message history in case you forgot what it was all about.

Sonnet very quickly sent me a replacement (a 400 MHz. board!) and everything is soo much quicker. I am now however, plagued with the stuttering audio/ video issue. Video clips in quicktime tend to stutter and audio from iTunes or games intermittently pauses.

The video issue might be alleviated when I put in my ATi Xclaim card (which I will, when I receive the comm slot Ethernet card, at which point I can pull out my current PCI ethernet card). ]

I have received word from other people with similar setups that say other audio apps like SoundJam do not have the stuttering issues. Of course this will not fix audio in games or QT but it will fix your MP3 playing.

Latest software version for the iPod and iTunes refuse to work on OS's older then 9.2!: I found this on MacFixIt. If anyone has updated to the latest version of iTunes or the iPod firmware and it does work, please email me the info. Thanks.

[iPod update and 'older' Mac OS versions
A reader found that after updating his iPod and iTunes, he was no longer about to update his iPod. Matt writes:

"I've been using my iPod with an old Mac (which has a G3 PowerLogix card and a Ratoc USB/FireWire card). After applying the latest iPod and iTunes updates, I get a message saying the iTunes will not work on any system older than 9.2."

This report suggests that users who have older versions of the Mac OS (especially those that cannot upgrade to OS 9.2 because of hardware compatibility issues) should use caution before updating to the latest iPod and iTunes updates. We are unaware if its possible (or smart) to revert iPod's software to a previous version. It also appears that iTunes 2.0.4 is more restrictive about the installed OS.]

Update on Newer's L2 G3 and OS 9.2 compatibility: Well no on told me that they have Newer's G3 running with OS 9.2 but many people wrote to say that it works great with OS 9.1. Only one person said it would not work with OS 9.0.4 or 9.1. So the question still stands. Does Newer's L2 G3 work with OS 9.2.x? If you have this setup, please email me the info. Thanks.

QT 5 has significant issues with MIDI playback: I found this info on the MacInTouch web site.

[Kelly writes that a significant issue with QuickTime 5 has apparently fallen through the cracks:
"I'm a professional saxophonist, and one of my key practice tools is Band in a Box (BIAB), a software program that generates surprisingly good rhythm section accompaniments. I use the program every day to work on unfamiliar chord progressions or tunes in challenging keys, and to get fast tunes up to speed, and just for general work on pitch and time.
I installed TurboTax yesterday, and it updated me to QuickTime 5. Later in the day, when I went to practice again, my BIAB rhythm section played like a bunch of drunken idiots! Instead of a rock-steady beat, the time would surge manicly ahead, then screech to a near halt, all within the space of a bar or two. Though I've played with some pretty horrible rhythm sections in my day, the program was now useless.
Since it worked fine in the morning, and the only change had been the TurboTax installation, I suspected the new version of QuickTime right off the bat, since I use the QuickTime Music Synthesizer to generate MIDI sounds for BIAB.
[...] I was surprised to discover through further searching on the web that this is a known issue with QT5 and 3rd party MIDI playback programs - PG Music's site mentions it [Jerky Playback with QT5 <http://www.pgmusic.com/080201.htm> ], as does the site for another MIDI program [EasyBeat FAQ <http://www.unisoftwareplus.com/products/easybeat/faq.html> ].
Apparently this timing issue has to do with QT5 and virtual memory; with VM turned off, the program appeared to behave better. However, turning off VM is not a good solution for me, and the only way I was able to entirely restore my Mac to its former reliable self was to trash QT5 and go back to QT 4.1.2 [...]" ]

External Video out cable for 5400/5500 owners: I was searching www.sunrem.com the other day and came across something that may interest 5400/5500 owners. I found a video out cable that allows you to use an external monitor. I am not sure where it attaches but I think it is to the little slot just behind the PRAM battery on the mother board? Below are links to the cable and the plug/shield needed to hold the port on the back of the case.

The cable is listed in stock but the plug it on back order. I bet it will work without the plug. You just might have to be creative on installing it :) I assume it will just allow video mirroring. It may also work with the 6400/6500? If anyone tries this, please email me how it goes. Thanks.

S-Video/Composite out card for 5400 through 6500 Macs: Alec sent me some info on obtaining the s-video out card for our Macs. Thanks Alec.

[I was recently given a copy of the Apple Parts Database and looked up the S-Video out card. I enquired of a source over here as to availability of it and the TV/FM Tuner. While it was a no-go on the tuner he did not stock the card but claimed to be able to order it and even quoted a price.

It's called 'Card/Cable, Video Out, with Labels', PN 076-0699. You appear to need a 'Bkt,External Mnt, Video Out', PN 922-3015 (Supplied in packs of 5) to secure it in place. This is a rectangular plate with a couple of holes in and two screws.

To end on a positive note I picked up an internal Zip with all fittings needed for the 6400 off eBay.

Yellow Dog Linux, Voodoo3, and Vimage G3 all in a 6360: Scott wrote that he has a 6360 with a Vimage G3 upgrade and he just added a Voodoo3 card and decided to try Yellow Dog Linux on it! He says all is well with this setup. Thanks for the info Scott. In the past, I was not able to run the Voodoo3 with my Vimage G3 upgrade but I had left in an ATI RageII card which may have affected the Voodoo3 somehow.

[I do not know if this is relevant anymore, but...

I just got a Voodoo3 2000 PCI in the mail recently and had already read all of the materials on the frustration at getting the card to work with G3 upgrades and / or Linux.

This particular message is being tapped out using KDE and Konquerer from my G3 accellerated 6360 running the Voodoo3 card with no glitches.

Some specs:
6360 with Vimage G3 240
Max RAM
System 8.6 with Vimage updates from this site.
Voodoo3 beta drivers from Xlr8 your Mac.

So far, all seems well. I have putzed about in Mac OS, and now in YDL with no hangs, glitches, or screen artifacts. There has been one restart for me to go into YDL at this time.

I shall keep all posted. Let me know if I am in the clear?
I have no 3d titles, so I cannot say a thing for the acceleration.

Right now this is being done from my Powerbook, so I do not have access to version numbers and such.

I believe the beta set of drivers for the Voodoo3 came from this site. There was no installer per se. I just color coded the extensions and the prefs file and dropped them into my System Folder. I used the ROM updater to flash the card in order for it to be used on a Mac and restarted. Prior to the flash I was running a Sun display on the 6360's built in Valkyrie card. The System Profiler could not identify the card in the PCI slot, but after the flashing, it found a Voodoo3 card in the slot. The Vimage extensions were obtained from this site as well. They load first, and then soft boot to wake up the G3, then the Voodoo3 extension loads. As for acceleration, I get faster redraws, and more resolution options but I don't own Quake for the Mac or anything like that, so I cannot say. I do have Myth II, that might work.

Linux seems fine, but I do not know about accelerated video there either. I did not have to reconfigure the Xserver though. Version 2.1 of YDL just picked it right up in 16 bit color at 800x600.

More later when I am back at my 6360.
