Just Updated 5/19/2001 Next update may not be until next month?: I am going to be taking some time off this month to visit family and friends so I may not get the next update ready in time? I will be back in business by next month though :) Thanks for being patient. Mac OSX 10.0.3 released: This release has more performance enhancements and bug fixes. OSX 10.0.3 is available from Apples web site and the OSX Software Update application. It doesn't update much and most people only notice some speed improvement. But that is saying a lot for OSX :) It hasn't changed any of the issues I noticed? OSX on the 6400: It is still not possible to install OSX on the 6400 but there are several people out there working on it right now! I have been receiving email from some of them and they are working hard to get it running. Thanks guys!!! At the moment, there is a lack of ATA bus support for the 6400 so the internal HD won't work. There is also something still causing open firmware to lockup? Lets all just keep our fingers crossed :) Update on getting full range audio from the rear audio jack: A few people wrote to say that they to have full range audio from the rear jack as well as the internal subwoofer playing. I think Corry has the answer. Thanks guys.
Rebates on your old L2 cache when purchasing a G3 upgrade from OtherWorld Computing: I found this link to OWC's web site where they are giving rebates to people who purchase G3 upgrades. They also have rebates for L2 G3 upgrades when turning in your old L2 cache. Very cool :) New iBooks are awesome!: I couldn't resist and we bought 2 of these iBooks :) We bought them from Re-Mac of Mesa AZ. They had the DVD version in stock but not the CDRW version which is the other one we wanted? So its on order right now. Also bought 2 Airport cards and an Airport Base Station and one 128M SODIMM. Got the DVD model all setup with the 128M SODIMM and airport card and all is great! I only had one problem and that was setting up the Airport Base Station? For some reason the setup assistant kept complaining that the base station I selected was not responding? After resetting the base station and running the manual config utility several times, I finally got it set up. This iBook is everything I had wanted in a note book computer except for dual displays (not mirrored), and a better video chip. Since there is not a better video chip out in mass production just yet, I didn't want to wait :) I know the mobile Radeon and Nvidis2Go are almost ready for prime time but not for Apple :( IBM Ultrastar 18ES Hard Drives need to be hacked to work on the 6400!: From time to time I get email from users having trouble installing one of these SCSI HD's in their 6400. These drives come in 9.1G and 18G sizes from IBM. They have a problem where they send a signal out pin #25 on the SCSI cable that should not be there? The fix is to remove pin #25 or cut the wire on the SCSI cable that corresponds to pin #25. This is not easy for most so I strongly suggest that you stay away from these drives! By the way, the 6400 may not be the only computer affected by this problem according to IBM! Click here for more info on the subject. That's all I got for this update. News was kind of light the past week or so. |

CD containing The 6400 Zone plus past history for sale 9/3/1999
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in purchasing a CD with my entire up-to-date site as well as my 6400 Take Apart Manual? Plus, many of the past Just Updates included! I think this would be a great idea for anyone who hasn't been able to keep up or never saw my site until recently. Also for those of you with Sherlock the CD is even better cause you can tell Sherlock to index the CD and then you can do a search on any topic, and if I ever talked about it, you'll find it! I have info as far back as mid 1997. I'm asking $15 which includes shipping for US residents (not sure what the price for international shipments would be yet?) and I will even include a few surprises! To make this offer even juicier I can add some download that you've been trying to get but just couldn't for some reason. Lets put my cable modem to work :) I will accept personal checks but I won't mail out the CD till it clears.
Please include your shipping address and email so I can let you know the CD is on its way.
amazon.com, books and more 7/2/98
I found a great way to earn some money while getting great deals to you on Macintosh books and software plus they have all kinds of other books, music, and more. Please click on the amazon.com link on the top of this page whenever you feel like purchasing something to help sponsor this site. If you're unsure of what you want and wish to get a list of Mac related items, just type Macintosh in the search field on their home page and you will be presented with many choices to select.
The 6400 Zone is created to help you gain access to useful software updates and great shareware programs that add functionality to your system. It is also a one stop road map to other informative sites for answering your questions. Most of the info here is geared towards the 6400, but it is useful for all PCI Performa models and even the 6500 and all-in-one Macs based on the same. It's even useful to other MAC systems. I will be referring to my 6400/200 clocked to 220Mhz as just 6400/220, OK.
I will keep it updated as often as I can but I don't have much free time to work on it, so I suggest you check back at least once every a week. That should be sufficient. If you don't see something you would like to see here or have your own software / web site that would benefit the Mac community, please write to me at zone6400@mac.com and I will check it out.
I use a Performa 6400/180 OS 9.0.4 and ASIP 6.3.2, Performa 6400/220 OS 9.0.4, B&W G3/350 OS 9.1 / OSX, PowerBook G3/233 OS 9.1, PM 6100 G3/240 OS 9.0.4, and a PowerBook DUO 270c OS 7.5.5. All of the software updates posted here are currently running on one or the other with minimal problems. If I do encounter a problem, I will post it for all to read and respond to. If you are having any problems and would like help just email me and if I can answer it I will, or I will post it here for others to read and respond to.
If any of the links do not work properly, please send an email to me the Site Master
