I'm Back :) I hope you all enjoyed your Memorial weekend? I sure have. We took a trip to CA to visit relatives and travel up the coast. During this trip I was able to talk my wife into visiting the Apple Store in the Glendale Galleria and Apples Headquarters in Cupertino! Unfortunately only the Glendale trip turned out full filling as we ended up at Cupertino on a Sunday and they where closed :( I guess we'll have to go back some other time :) Here are a few pics from the outside of Apples Headquarters.

We also visited Catalina Island for a few days. Went to the Monteray Bay Aquarium. Ate lunch on Pier 39 in San Francisco. And road the Skunk Train from Willits CA to Fort Bragg. It was quite a trip as you can see.

The major downside (to me maybe, but not my wife) was that my dialup connection only allowed me to download email and not answer any? I am using Apples mac.com service to receive and send some of my email but sending always failed? It worked fine once I got home on my cable network though. Strange?

Another 6400 owner cuts his own upper bay bezel for a CDROM: Marco sent me some pics of his attempt to cut the bezel of the upper bay to accommodate a CDROM. Thanks Marco. His job was much better then mine :) It just takes some patients.

[I just bought a CDRW Yamaha 8/4/24 for My Powermac 65OO and put it in the expansion bay. The aspect of the Mac without the bezel is really sad and, after reading your tutorial about making a CD bezel, I decided to make my own. I bought the sled and a ZIP bezel and tried to modify it. I cut it roughly with an electric saw, from top of the rectangle to bottom of the zip opening, and from the left inside of the rectangle to the right inside (see photos). Then I finished the work with two files, a rough for rough work and a fine for finish (the plastic is very easy to file). I took no measurement but I did the work very progressively, putting the bezel on the mac to see how it looked, then filing again, trying one more time and so one. It took me a little less than three hours to achieve the work, but the result is not too bad. I let you be the judge.

The 6400 Zone Equipment for sale site rules: I have noticed that a lot of people are leaving replies to posts telling the seller that they are interested in the product for sale. I would like to discourage this habit and rather you would email the sellers (or people asking for equipment) instead. This way the other party gets your response ASAP and you can settle your transaction must faster. It also keeps the page list from getting very big and hard to read being filled with a bunch of replies.

I intended the reply section to be used mainly for the people to tell us what items have sold or are no longer needed so that no one else asks. Or if a poster is not responding to emails then to leave a reply telling the rest of us that this person is not responding to emails and may not have the item anymore? If you just leave a reply and do not email the seller then you may get put behind the line of others that do email. I do not expect or request sellers to keep coming back to see if anyone has replied. That is to much work I think.

One last thing, if you have a technical question, please leave those kinds of posts on my Forums site. They will get answered faster and also not take up space on the equipment page. Thanks :)

IBM 18ES SCSI HD issues on the Mac: In the past I had reported on an issue where this IBM drive would not work on a Mac and that you had to remove or cut out pin #25 on the SCSI cable or on the drive to make it work. Dave suggests a better method that does not alter your 6400 or new IBM drive. Thanks Dave.

Yep, it's true about cutting pin #25 because I encountered the same problemo. Here's what you can suggest to your readers though as cool way to preserve the integrity of drive and cable. You can buy a female/male adapter connector that mounts to hard drive so that instead of cutting the actual hard drive pin, you cut the connector pin. Works great. I have since moved this drive to my 9650 and all pins are intact because of this little trick. Just an idea. Take care.

In response to corry's answer on the subwoofer deal: Joey sent me some info on why the 6400's subwoofer base response is reduced when 3D surround sound is activated. Thanks Joey.

[The decrease in base in the sound coming from the 6400 with the 3D sound on is not a result of the subwoofer interfering. The 3D sound is simply a signal processor taking the stereo field and spreading it even thinner to create a more surround type effect. One reason base is lost is because most base would be mixed closer to the center of the stereo field and would not be amplified by the DSP. also, the higher frequencies are the ones that give away direction the most, so spreading them out and amplifying them in the furthest reaches of the stereo field is more necessary than doing so with the base which acts differently. As far as the subwoofer staying on... Plugging something in the rear sound out jack disables the 6400s equivalent to the standard internal speaker, because they assume you are plugging in better speakers and don't want that sound still coming from the box. The subwoofer's frequencies keep going because the added base was helpful for people with the Apple Multiscan and AV monitors with small internal speakers. It's the same type of setup as most computer speakers come today: two small speakers and a subwoofer. Apple, just gives us the subwoofer built in.

Copying to a USB HD on a 6400 not working?: Marco is having problems copying data to his USB HD from his 6400 using a keyspan USB PCI card. The USB HD used to be his IDE internal HD that he placed in an IDE to USB external case. If anyone is having similar issues, please email me. Thanks.

[I just changed the internal Quantum 6 Go stock HD of my PM 6500/300 for an IBM DTLA 305040 (40 Go at 5400 rpm). It works fine, faster (I can now capure video in 384x288 at 25 fps) and quieter. I put the stock HD in an external USB case. I have a lot of problems when trying to copy files from one HD to the other. The copy often freezes (but the cursor is not frozen). It is as if it was very long to copy, but the Mac could stay in this state for hours. In fact copy is blocked and the only solution to quit that state is to restart the Mac. My Mac is running under OS 8.6. I tried with USB card support 1.3.5 or 1.4.1. Always the same problems.
The extensions are:

• HID Library 1.3.5,
• serialShimLib 1.0.1,
• USB device extension 1.3.5,
• USB support 1.3.5
• USB MAss Storage extension 2.0.4,
• USB Mass Storage Support 2.0.4

and the specific extensions that came with the USB case:

• USB-IDE Adapter Sim,
• USB-IDE Bridge Driver,
• USB-IDE Cable Driver.

I tried adding USB HID Driver 1.25f6 or Module Universal USBHID 1.01 (my system is basically a french version). Not better.
I have a Keyspan two USB ports PCI card with all the software ( 3 elements) installed. The USB case is seen by the system (as Apple system Profiler confirms).
Speed doubler 8 is installed too but I tried without it and did not notice any difference.

More details: it seems that the Mac has more problems with big files composed from a lot of little files. For getting back my old files from the USB HD I had to do it little part by little part. I tried making Disk Copy images and then copying them. I had more success with that method but it blocks yet sometimes. Mystery.]

This problems sounds very close to the floppy drive issue when a USB card is installed on our 6400's? I wonder if they are related?

OSX on unsupported Macs installer: Here is a link to a site with info on an installer that will allow OSX to run on unsupported Macs. It does not list the 6400 as it is made for 604e systems. But it makes installing OSX so much easier on these systems! Please email me if any of you try this on your 6400/6500. Thanks

iMic from Griffin does not work on a 6400/6500: Ralph sent me info that he tried Griffins iMic (a product that gives USB only Macs a mic input) on his 6500 and it didn't work. Then he read their FAQs and found that it only works on Macs with built in USB ports. At least we have a real audio in jack. Thanks Ralph.

[Hi Tom, after looking at the Griffin support page I found out why the iMic no work with my PM6500 (see below). I sent them a request for help with it. I figured it might be a better option than the finicky built in sound card. I really got it for the iBook and my eventual Powerbook but wanted to test it on the PM6500. FYI. R.

Oops, I didn't see this before I bought the iMic. From their support page:

"Q. I have a PCI USB card in my older Mac; can I use the iMic?

A. Not as far as we know. Apple says that USB Audio is only supported on machines that have built-in USB ports. A USB card installed in older Macs may support other USB functions, but according to Apple it won't support USB Audio."]

ATI Radeon cards prevents ethernet card from working. Swapping PCI slot locations may be the fix?: Robert sends word that once he installed an ATI Radeon card in his 6400 then his Asante ethernet card stopped working? He was able to swap the PCI slot locations and then it worked again but maybe not for all? Thanks for the info Robert.

[I bought the 32 MB ATI Radeon card and it works fine but since installing, I can't get my ethernet PCI card from Asante to work. I am using the ethernet card to print to a 20/800 GCC laser printer. It worked fine before I installed the Radeon card. This is on a 6400 at work. I also have the same 6400 setup at my home except the laser printer. Instead of the laser printer, I have a ethernet card used on a Airport network which worked fine till I installed the Radeon card. I did call ATI and Asante and did figure out that the ethernet card needs to be in the slot furthest away from the motherboard. I have gotten the ethernet/airport to work by observing that in the tcp/ip control panel the subnet mask number needs to be 255.255.255.0. It was not so I copied my tcp/ip preferences from my other airport enabled macs to the 6400 and it worked! Now I need to figure out what will make the card work at my work 6400. When I figure it out, I will report back.

iBook for my wife has been changed: Well it has been a month since we ordered her CDRW iBook and still no word on when or if they will ship? We decided to change the order to the DVD/CDRW combo drive and was able to pick it up last week! It is just as good as mine but she also has CDRW capability and the Toshiba HD in hers is much quieter then my IBM HD. Kind of makes me wish I got the same combo drive version my self :) Anyway she is very happy with it and that is what counts.

OSX 10.0.4 released: Apple just released OSX 10.0.4 update and its available through the software update app in OSX. It fixes many little issues for OSX including the wake from sleep crash on these new iBooks when classic was started in OSX. I can now put my iBook to sleep and it wakes up just fine. Previously it seemed to not even go to sleep as the sleep indicator would not even light up if classic had been running?

Epson Stylus Photo 780 USB printer on a 6400: I just bought a new inkjet from Epson. The Epson Stylus Photo 780 and connected it to my SIIG USB card. I sold our older Epson 700 to my wifes cousin as they have a 6100 and wanted to get a printer. Well no one makes Mac serial printers anymore so I sold them ours and upgraded to the 780. It is a little quieter then the older 700 but not as silent as their business models in the 8xx and 9xx numbered range. Those new printers a near silent! Anyway the DPI has been raised from 1440x720 to 2880x720! That is twice the DPI in the horizontal direction. Also the drivers that come with this printer have Epsons AppleTalk printer sharing built in. Unlike the Epson 700 where I had to use a Hacked set of drivers, this one works out of the box.

A few notes that make this an even bigger deal than it seems. The instructions and online info all state it is for Macs with built in USB ports only, yet it runs just fine on my 6400 with the USB PCI card. Also, Apples USB Printer Sharing software also states its for built in USB ports only and it works just fine. I wanted to use Apples printer sharing software because it uses TCP/IP instead of Apple Talk so its not only faster but I can leave Apple Talk inactive on our iBooks which is nice because Apple Talk really drains the batteries! Now everything that wasn't supposed to work is :) You can read more info on the Epson 780 from their web site.

Dual USB cards in a 6400: Since I added the USB printer I had run out of USB slots on my ADS USB card on my server. Since I am no longer using the other 6400, I decided to remove its SIIG USB card and place it in the server to save money on buying a USB hub. The 2 cards work great together with Apples software. No need to install any other software once you have one card up and running. Apple System Profiler shows 2 separate USB busses now. USB 0 and USB 1.

And just so you know I have both USB cards in my PCI chassis along with an Adaptec 2930u SCSI card.
