Geo Modem drivers for OS 9!: Greg sent me some Geo Modem drivers he found on Google that allow him to open the control panel without holding any special keys to open non-OS9 compliant control panels. Thanks Greg. Basically he says the needed control panel is for an ISDN adaptor but seems to work fine on his internal Geo Modem. If anyone can verify this, I would greatly appreciate it :) I'll be trying them myself in a few days.

Attached are the two control panels I use and some other files. The one needs to be in place, but does not open normally. The other works fine, but somehow links with the first one and will not work by itself (at least for me). I suppose you could change the name or make the one you aren't actually using a hidden file.

The control panel is a third party item that is part of a french package for using geoports and isdn. I forget the exact nature of it, except that a google search for getting an express modem to work under OS9 turned up a hit that led to it. The word SAGEM comes to mind. Try adding that to any search you do.

As far as I can tell, the control panel actually does something. I can turn applefax reception on and off using it.

AppleVideo player not recognizing Apple TV Tuner card in OS 9?: Greg also sends word that since he updated to OS 9, he is unable to select TV Tuner as an input for the AppleVideo player. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I have apple video player. When you run it, it brings up a "controls" window, and the only selection that can be made is for playing movies. There used to be (under OS8.5) a "TV" control that would let you generate a TV screen and resize it. The computer does not seem to recognize the presence of the TV hardware, and I was hoping someone had a version of the extensions, etc. that worked under OS9.04.

Slower printer response with a USB card attached printer?: Lorenzo sent word that his printing feels sluggish on his 6400 with an HP printer connected through a USB card. I think it's do to not having a G3 upgrade as most inkjet printers use the computers CPU to render the image before printing. I noticed on my 6400 even with a serial printer that it took a long time to print a picture with the G3 removed! Putting the G3 back in and everything was back to the way I remembered :) If anyone has tried a serial printer and then switched to a USB printer and noticed a slowdown, please email me the details. Thanks. By the way my USB Epson 780 prints just as fast as my older Epson 700 serial printer.

I refer to a line posted on your site, concerning the use of USB peripherals/cards on a 6400. I did the same recently: As I was tired of having to peer through the in-box specs of all the printers in all the computer shops I was visiting, while hoping to find an old ADB printer, I decided to "go USB". I so just bought a dual-ports USB card together with an HP 840C inkjet printer. In a matter of minutes I got the card up and working and plugged the printer in. The whole matter was absolutely hassle-free and I now have my own desktop printing facilities :-).

The only thing that leaves me a little dubious regards the fact that the printing operations seem somewhat slow. I cannot explain it in a "technical" (or rather rational) way but, from the moment in which I launch the "print" command, 30 or 40 seconds can pass, so it seems to me that the printer works flawlessly but there is a sort of slowdown on the data-passage between the Mac and the printer itself. Is it possible that this kind of problem regards the fact that the printer is hooked on an USB card which resides on a PCI slot, instead of a "native/genuine" USB card directly pinned down to the motherboard? Did you notice any of the above during your experimentations with USB devices?

This "odd" feeling I have, prevented me from buying an USB 56k modem in order to hook it to the second USB port, I went for an "ADB" modem instead as I feared that I would have got the same slowdowns... Am I correct or do I just need to find a good doctor :-)?

Just in case: If my impression should have proven right, is there any workaround that can solve this problem?

In order to be more precise I'll add that I'm running a 6400/180 Performa w/56 mb ram, 512k L2 cache, 4gb E-ide disk I got from an "old" G3/233. Other peripherals? Yes: A Yamaha cd-rom burner I mounted in the expansion bay, an external Zip unit, a drawing slate a Palm cradle and the standard cd-rom/floppy drives.

Sonnet Clocker recompiled and carbonized!: One of my readers has recompiled both clockers so that they won't time out any more and he carbonized them! Thanks. Though no 6400 can run OSX, you might feel like clocking the extension on another system running OSX and then move it back to your 6400 :)

OS 9.1 and USBSerial extension not compatible: Sam sends word that he system kept getting a fatal error after installing OS 9.1 It turned out to be the USB Serial extension installed by his HandSpring Visor. He has tried different versions of this extension and the Apple USB extensions but it still fails. He told me that HandSpring has a newer drive posted and he is going to give it a try. I finally downloaded all the segments of ) OS 9.1 and installed it without any trouble.

When I restarted the system, I had a fatal error on startup. Rebooting without extensions was fine.

After much sleuthing, I narrowed the crash down to the extension: "USB Serial." This is a driver installed by my Handspring Visor. The catch is that I need that extension to run my HotSync. I'm still working on this. I'll let you know what I figure out.

Reader confirms that the Orange Micro firewire/USB combo card works on the 6400: Even though I was told the Orange combo card works on the 6400, I hadn't heard from any actual 6400 users running it with both the USB and Firewire ports in use. A just received this letter from a reader who says everything is working fine with it. In fact he says the Evergreen card did not work for him which is just the opposite info I have received in the past? I guess the Mac is just not as plug and play as it used to be as we become more PC like :(

[Love the site. Thought I would send in a note regarding my 6400/200 which was upgraded with a sonnet 300/1M. Originally purchased a USB/Firewire card from Evergreen and my firewire worked but not my USB plugs. I tried everything because I just purchased a new HP 990CSE (fast) and wanted to try it out. Emails and phone calls to their customer service went unanswered. An email to HP said try older USB extensions - didn't work. So I went and purchased a Orange Micro USB/Firewire card. 10 minutes after its arrival I was running both sides of the card. USB with my HP Deskjet 990CSE and the Firewire side with a Que!Fire 16x12x40. Here is my configuration:

Pioneer 305s DVD drive in a 6400!: Scott is the first to tell me he has a DVD drive installed in the stock CDROM location of a 6400. Thanks Scott.

[We just installed a Pioneer 305s slot-loading DVD ROM drive in place of the stock drive and it works great! We used the Intech driver and the audio cable hack as posted on your site. The hacked Apple DVD Player works good too; just some occasional skipping on the audio.

The DVD drive fit perfectly; except (of course) for the audio cable. It is kinda cool to have the slot loading feature too. I will try to take some pics for you.

Copy issue fix with USB devices (and external devices in general) with OS 8.6 being the possible culprit?: Francois read the post I had where Marco was having trouble copying files to a USB attached HD and OS 8.6 may be the problem. The fix for him was to use Connectix's Speed Doubler which takes over copying functions when installed. Thanks for the info Francois. I am a french macuser and I own a 6400 with Sonnet G3 400/1M. I had exactly the same problem that Marco had and I am also under MacOS 8.6 I had the same issues when copying big chunks of data from HD onto other slower devices (Syquest for example). When the freeze occur in the middle of a copy, the Mac must be restarted. And I also found that copying little parts by little parts work better.

Then I found a work around for this annoying problem. I use Speed Doubler 8.1.2a, with only accelerate copy active. No matter the hypothetical speedup! The most important is that copies work always and very fine, and with every kind of devices. Perhaps, this will help you? I use this extension 3 years ago, and I have no more copying's problems.

Note: Deactivate accelerate 68k's emulation. This function is useless, and can cause some problems compatibility.

The problem appears only with Mac OS 8.6.

Indeed, my devices configuration is the same since Mac OS 7.5.3 (the original 6400's system)

same syquest, same SCSI cables, same 6400, same others externals device and no problem with successive MacOS 7.5.5 - 7.6 - 8.0 - 8.1 - 8.5 - 8.5.1. Never crash with copying from HD to syquest. But the first time that I have installed MacOS 8.6 and copied from HD to syquest a folder with numerous files, the Mac had frozen.

I am sure that the system 8.6 had a little bug (at least with a 6400). because I repeat tests with Mac OS 8.5 and 8.5.1 and the problem disappear. When I come back to Mac OS 8.6, the copy from HD to syquest freeze again the Mac.

I have not tested this problem with system 9.x

I think it's logic that Speed doubler eradicate the problem because this extension load his own copies functionality and neutralize the MacOS copy feature. It work at a very low level. His file type is 'scri' and not 'INIT'. So it is loaded in first when the Mac boots.

Connectix continue Speed Doubler only for that useful function with a new name:'Copy Agent'. It's the only function really fine! In particularly smart copy and scheduler.

But perhaps the MacOS 9 (and MacOS X?) copy fine for our venerable 6400 ;)

The 6400 Zone Equipment for sale site rules (still posted from last update): I have noticed that a lot of people are leaving replies to posts telling the seller that they are interested in the product for sale. I would like to discourage this habit and rather you would email the sellers (or people asking for equipment) instead. This way the other party gets your response ASAP and you can settle your transaction must faster. It also keeps the page list from getting very big and hard to read being filled with a bunch of replies.

I intended the reply section to be used mainly for the people to tell us what items have sold or are no longer needed so that no one else asks. Or if a poster is not responding to emails then to leave a reply telling the rest of us that this person is not responding to emails and may not have the item anymore? If you just leave a reply and do not email the seller then you may get put behind the line of others that do email. I do not expect or request sellers to keep coming back to see if anyone has replied. That is to much work I think.

One last thing, if you have a technical question, please leave those kinds of posts on my Forums site. They will get answered faster and also not take up space on the equipment page. Thanks :)
