I emailed them and they said that it is compatible with NTSC, PAL, and SECAM for video input. You can change this via software. But you cannot change the video out specs. They did not tell me if it came with the video out port or what standard the video out used if it did come with it? So at least you can watch your favorite TV show but you might not be able to display your video on a TV or VCR?

Directions for swapping out stock IDE HD from Sean: Sean sent me some very detailed instructions on installing a new IDE HD in your 6400/6500. It starts with backing up your software to installing the new HD and restoring your data. Thanks Sean!

Mobilities T35 PCI expansion chassis does not work on the 6400?: Bill bought and tried one of their expansion chassis on his 6400 to find out that it didn't work! He emailed Mobility and they confirmed that it won't work.

[Thanks Tom. Mobility again confirmed the lack of compatibility. As you know, they now own Magma. I spoke with their tech support and the more expensive Magma solution works in the 6400 but is very different than the T35 solution. Bill]

When I had emailed them in the past, they had no info on 6400/6500 compatibility. I guess they got a chance to test one finally? Their web site still only shows test info from B&W G3's up to the AGP G4's. No mention of earlier Macs. I will email them for more info.

I contacted Magma and they say their case is still compatible with the 6400. They did change their cable to a smaller rounder type similar to Mobilities but it is much thicker and still uses their older dual bridge technology instead of Mobilities split bridge technology. But they are looking into the split bridge method.

Sonnet users may still need some of the hacks I posted to fix stability issues: I posted a bunch of hacks when Sonnet first started selling their L2 G3's to help reduce stability issues that affected the early Crescendo drivers. Well it seems that these hacks are still needed :( I was sent this letter from a reader of who had to try several hacks before his system became stable.

[I bought and installed the Sonnet G3 400 Mhz/512k cache card,, ever since I installed it, the time from the happy Mac icon to the first extension picture has increased to almost double. Also I noticed my system kind of started to lag alot. Like when I convert some Mp3 files to wave for example, the process seems to stop many times for about 10-20 seconds and then return back to normal. I used the PCI timing update and it had no effect and it was as if it was making it worse. Then I decided to remove the math libmoto extension and the PCI timing extension and decided to make the g3 extension load first. No matter what I did, the sped doubler extension always starts first. Finally, I opened resedit, and changed the thing in the extension from an INIT to "scri", and then changed its name by adding two spaces before its name. Then went to the "EM extension" and made sure it had only one space in its beginning. and restarted the machine, I didn't get any more system freezing or lags since then. I don't know what was it specifically that I did that fixed my problem. It seems that if the EM extension loaded first, it will load the speed double extension and then the sonnet extension, I just reversed the whole thing, and hopping it will go normal for the next few days.]

I had trouble with Connectix's SpeedDoubler as well and also had to force the Crescendo to boot before the SD extension. This may have been the real cause the his case?

Reminder on Sonnet compatibility issues with the Geo modem: Raymond was having issues with his Sonnet L2 G3 and after contacting Sonnet, he removed the Geo software even though he did not have the modem card installed, and it fixed his issues. Thanks Raymond.

[Tom, I received good technical help from the people of Sonnet. The culprit was the Geoport modem software which was still installed in the extension folder. I did not realize this since I obtained my Computer without the Geoport modem installed. After removing this software my machine booted like it should be and I have no troubles with anything so far. Sonnet stated that the Geoport hardware and software are totally incompatible with the G3 processor.

At first Sonnet did not say anything about issues with the Geo modem but now they state it will not work period. Just so you know, some users such as myself, were able run the Geo modem and Sonnet L2 G3 together just fine. But if you are having issues and you have the Geo modem installed. This might be a good place to start trouble shooting.

Dual video cards possible in the 6400?: Joshuha also notes that he was able to run 2 ATI PCI video cards in his 6400 as long as the stock port was not in use but to be warned that 2 highend video cards will fry your system! Thanks Joshuha.

[I found out that, no matter what, you cannot have 2 16MB or 1 16MB and 1 32MB card in
the comp, the voltage overloads the PCI bus and KILLS the logic board (a very sad day for me...). Thankfully, I can replace it cheap.]

I had tried a Voodoo3 and an ATI Rage128 card in my 6400 before and both monitors sleep lights went red!!! I took this as a bad sign and never tried dual video cards again. He states you can use an older ATI card with only 4MB VRAM with a newer card like the Radeon and it has worked for him. I take no responsibility if you try. Try this at your own risk!!!! I suggest you just run one video card and the stock port if you want dual monitors.

Update on 6400 CD drive issues with OS 9.0.4: Ken writes that he is having the exact same problems with his CDROM drive on his 6400 that where reported when OS 9.0.4 came out. But he notes that all CD drivers from OS 8.6's up to OS 9.1's crash his OS 9.0.4 system when trying to access the CDROM drive? Using pre OS 8.6 drivers seem to work.

If I remember, the OS 8.0 CD drivers where compatible with non-Apple CD drives so I wonder if he has a non-Apple CDROM or not? I emailed asking for more info.

[I have just replaced my CD drive in my 6400/180, Sonnet L2/G3, OS9.0.4, because of the problems that I now see are the same as those posted in "OS9.0.4 and CDROM driver issues? 4/20/2000". The new drive does not work either. The new drive revision number is 8.0e. The original was 8.0h.

If I put CD/DVD Driver 1.2.2 (from OS8.6), Apple CD/DVD Driver 1.3.1 (from OS9.0), Apple CD-DVD Driver 1.3.5 (from OS9.0.4), or Apple CD/DVD Driver 1.4.5 (from OS9.1) in the ext folder, I either hang at the CD driver on start up or, if start up is OK, the CD drive hangs when I insert a CD.

The only way I can use the CD is to boot, not from but with, an OS8.0 CD in the drive. I can then run OS9.0.4 and use other CDs. Putting an OS9.0 CD in the drive does not work. It hangs trying to mount the OS9.0 CD.

Booting with the OS8 CD in the drive, shows the driver as 5.4 (from the CD I assume). If I then install Apple CD-ROM 5.4 in the ext folder everything seems to work.

Is this the only fix to this problem? Is the same true of OS9.1?

By the way the fix for this issue was to revert to OS 8.6 CDROM drivers but as you can see he already tried that :(

Farallon issue with 6400 shutdown returns?: Yann reports that he installed version 2.4 of Farallons ethernet 10/100 driver and was unable to shutdown his 6400 the proper way. Reverting to the 2.1 driver fixed it. Thanks Yann.

I had version 2.4, the latest drivers found on Farallon's website. Yesterday, I switched back to the original driver found on the CD (version 2.1). I added recent Open Transport extensions available on the 6400's Zone. I also discovered that I had manually disabled the File sharing extension a long time ago and I was finally able to mount my 6400 hard disk on the iBook's desktop. (My first goal was to mount the iBook on the 6400)
Now everything seems to work and my 6400 didn't refuse to shut down! :)]

This problem was reported awhile back but with Farallons version 2.0 drivers. I wonder if the problem has come back to haunt us? If you are using Farallons 2.4 ethernet driver, could you please email me how its working for you? Thanks

Update on Issues with OS 9.1 and Apples COMM II ethernet card: I'm not sure this will help Victors problem but I had another reader with similar issues of not being able to connect to the internet after installing a Linksys router and the fix was either adding a second Name Server (DNS) Address or filling in the Additional Search Domain info? After doing both of these with his @Home cable service, he was able to access the internet through the router. I thought that others may be having similar issues and wanted to let you all know :)

COX@home service usually gives you two Name Server (DNS) Addresses that look like 24.x.x.33 and 24.x.x.34 where x.x are numbers for your particular location. But they all seem to end in 33 and 34

Their Additional Search domain address look like chnd1.az.home.com for my location. The beginning of the address represents the area you live in.

So if you are having trouble and you do not have info similar to this entered in your TCP/IP control panel, then find the info for your area and give it a try. Not sure about DSL service but I assume they do something similar.
