Just Update 11/4/2001

This updates is light because we went to visit our relatives last week. We had a great time and my son even won first place at a pumpkin decorating contest :) He's only 5 years old to!

Audio stuttering with MacPicasso 540 video card: Fabounio writes that he has audio stuttering issues when moving windows around the desktop if 2D acceleration is enabled on his MacPicasso 540 video card. Thanks for the info Fabounio.

[Hello
I have a 6400 with a Sonnet G3/400 processor upgrade and, like a lot of us, I to have audio stutterings but while scrolling or moving windows. This affects only the monitor which is connected to my picasso 540 video card. On the other monitor connected to the original videoport, I have no problems? I can move all windows anywhere I want without audio stutters. By removing extensions one by one, I totally remove my problem with the picasso card. It is the graphic accelerator of the card itself! If I remove that extension, the graphics are slow (no more gx acceleration) but audio does not suffer anymore! It is a cruel dilemma for me because the difference of speed is very important. Fast display or good audio? I have to choose. I wrote to Village Tronic to talk about this, and if they could rewrite their driver. Maybe a timing to reset ? I had a response in July but since then, nothing. I wrote to them 3 times without anymore response.

What is the best I can do? Any idea at this point? Can I overclock the bus on my performa? Maybe with a 50 MHz bus, I will have less problems with audio. Or is that a bad idea?

And the best of all, the audio stuttering does not happen under VirtualPC! Even with the driver of my graphic card installed! ONLY moving Mac OS windows suffer! Anyone here using MacPicasso 540? Thanks for your help.

Has anyone else had this type of audio issue? If so then please write me. Thanks!

Utility for Acard PCI-IDE card owners to help fix audio stuttering issues: I found this info on Accelerate Your Mac's web site. He notes a Utility provided by Acard to reduce or eliminate the audio stuttering issues noted by many users of older Macs with their PCI-IDE card installed.

[Acard's A/V Utility for Stuttering Audio Issues w/PCI IDE cards: -
If you have an older (pre-G3) Mac with Acard PCI IDE card with stuttering audio problems, try Acard's A/V Optimizer (direct download link is here). A reader with a 7500 and Acard ATA/66 card reported it solved his problems. Acard notes it lowers performance (as does Sonnet's ATA/100 card utility noted in past tests here).
The readme file with the download has information on using it. The Sonnet ATA/66 cards were made by Acard, but the readme says the utility is only for Acard models. (I'd suspect it would work with Sonnet Tempo ATA/66 and RAID cards, but welcome any reports from owners trying it). Sonnet's ATA/100 card is made by Promise and comes with their own A/V utility.]

One Sonnet G3 user having trouble with OS 9.2.1?: Peter is having trouble getting OS 9.2.1 and his Sonnet G3 to run together? In the past I noted that OS 9.2.1 worked fine with the Sonnet G3. If you think you have a solution for Peters problem, please email me. Thanks!

[Tom,
I recently purchased a Sonnet G3/L2 400/1 MB card and cannot seem to get it to work in my Performa 6400/180. I recently updated to Mac OS 9.2.1 and the system freezes every time the extension (Crescendo 1.4.6) attempts to load. I've tried changing the extension load order and using just base 9.2.1 extensions except for Conflict Catcher 8.1. I also tried installing 9.1 on another partition, but the same freeze occurs.

I Previously had a Vimage Vpower PF/G3 240 card, which appears to be incompatible with any ATI card beyond Rage Pro. Any news on that?

My computer is a Performa 6400/180 with 104 MB of RAM, Sonnet L2 G3 400/1MB, internal IDE Maxtor 40 GB HD, ATI Radeon Mac Edition 32 MB PCI, external SCSI Epson Zip drive, Farallon Fast EtherTX (10/100) Comm Slot II card, Sonnet Tango USB/Firewire Dual Port Card, Kensington Orbit serial port mouse, HP DeskJet 970 Cxi printer and external Firewire Sony Spressa CD-RW drive.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,
Peter]

CD containing The 6400 Zone plus past history for sale 9/3/1999

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in purchasing a CD with my entire up-to-date site as well as my 6400 Take Apart Manual? Plus, many of the past Just Updates included! I think this would be a great idea for anyone who hasn't been able to keep up or never saw my site until recently. Also for those of you with Sherlock the CD is even better cause you can tell Sherlock to index the CD and then you can do a search on any topic, and if I ever talked about it, you'll find it! I have info as far back as mid 1997. I'm asking $15 which includes shipping for US residents (not sure what the price for international shipments would be yet?) and I will even include a few surprises! To make this offer even juicier I can add some download that you've been trying to get but just couldn't for some reason. Lets put my cable modem to work :) I will accept personal checks but I won't mail out the CD till it clears.

Please include your shipping address and email so I can let you know the CD is on its way.

amazon.com, books and more 7/2/98

I found a great way to earn some money while getting great deals to you on Macintosh books and software plus they have all kinds of other books, music, and more. Please click on the amazon.com link on the top of this page whenever you feel like purchasing something to help sponsor this site. If you're unsure of what you want and wish to get a list of Mac related items, just type Macintosh in the search field on their home page and you will be presented with many choices to select.

The 6400 Zone is created to help you gain access to useful software updates and great shareware programs that add functionality to your system. It is also a one stop road map to other informative sites for answering your questions. Most of the info here is geared towards the 6400, but it is useful for all PCI Performa models and even the 6500 and all-in-one Macs based on the same. It's even useful to other MAC systems. I will be referring to my 6400/200 clocked to 220Mhz as just 6400/220, OK.

I will keep it updated as often as I can but I don't have much free time to work on it, so I suggest you check back at least once every a week. That should be sufficient. If you don't see something you would like to see here or have your own software / web site that would benefit the Mac community, please write to me at zone6400@mac.com and I will check it out.

I use a Performa 6400/Vimage G3 320 OS 9.0.4 and ASIP 6.3.2, B&W G3/350 OS 9.2.1 / OSX 10.1, iBook Dual USB OS 9.2.1 / OSX 10.1, PowerBook G3/233 OS 9.1, PM 6100 G3/240 OS 9.1, and a PowerBook DUO 270c OS 7.5.5. If I encounter any problems, I will post them for all to read and respond to. Likewise, if you are having any problems and would like help just email me and if I can answer it I will, or I will post it here for others to read and respond to.

If any of the links do not work properly, please send an email to me the Site Master
