Just Update 12/2/2001

I may lose my internet service! I currently have internet access with COX which in turn uses @Home to provide internet service. @Home is currently trying to file for bankruptcy and discontinue service. If this happens before COX can switch me over to another service, I may not be able to update my site as often as I have. Although I don't think it will take more then 2 weeks for COX to figure something out, you just never know what can happen? So please utilize my Forums for writing to me so I don't miss anything :) I can still read these from work. I'll let you all know when I find out what COX is up to. Thanks for being so patient.

Are you getting "FORBIDDEN" errors when trying to visit my site?: I have been getting this error pop up many times over the past week while trying to access my own site from any web browser on Macs or PCs! It seems I am not alone as there are a lot of discussions about this going on at Apples Forums. They are currently looking into the problem. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may be causing you :(

User report of OS 9.2.1 install on a 6400/200: Andrew writes that he was able to update his 6400/200 to OS 9.2.1 and that it's very stable. Thanks Andrew.

[Hi...love this site...has extended the life of my Performa immeasurably...I have the following on my computer: 6400/200 with Sonnet 300/1M using 1.4.6 extension, 30GB Maxtor 7200rpm, 136MB Ram, Orange Micro USB/Firewire card, ethernet card, ATI Radeon 32MB DDR...and installed OS 9.2.1 without incident...hardest part was backing up the HD and making the partition to make the install. Using the patches from http://homepage.mac.com/cywong/FileSharing.html did not work for me but the patch from http://homepage.mac.com/scottboone/FileSharing.html worked like a charm...Worked as per the instructions on your page...overall the system does feel more stable...system is more responsive...startup and shut down is much quicker...and applications have a little added zip...need to try toast and itunes later...IT DOES WORK...
Thanks...
Andrew]

Macally Firewire/USB combo card not supported on a 6500: David sent me some info he got from Macally about compatibility issues with his 6500. They note their card won't work for the same reason that the other combo cards won't work. The ROM issue on the 6500 :( Thanks David.

[I just spoke with MacAlly customer support. They told me that the card is incompatible with the 6500 because of PCI incompatibility.

Thanks for your help. I am going to try to return the card. Is the Sonnet card still available? Also, is there a Firewire card that works? There should be, since the installer disks that came with the 6500 included Firewire extensions...
Thanks again,
David]

I noticed that Sonnet has their PRAM patch for this issue posted on their web site to make their Tango card work on the 6500. I wonder if it would work for other combo cards besides their own? If anyone tries, I would love to hear from you! Also in response to his firewire only card compatibility question, yes, any Mac compatible firewire only card should work. Its only the combo cards that have issues because the ROM on the 6500 has a bug that prevents it from using the PCI bridge chip on these cards. Combo cards are actually 2 PCI cards in one. One for USB and one for firewire. The bridge chip allows both to reside on one card and still both can talk to the mother boards as if they where on 2 separate cards.

Sonnet Tango card causing audio stuttering on a 6400: Victor writes that his 6400 was free of audio issues until he installed Sonnets Tango firewire/USB card. He was able to fix it by removing the USB drivers but that's not a great solution so he finally gave up and removed the card. Thanks for the info Victor. This makes the second person to confirm that Sonnets Tango card causes this issue :(

[Hi FYI: I gave up and removed the TANGO USB/Firewire combo card on my 6400, my SRS is back, sound is clear, no distortion. I purchased a preowned Beige G3, I am using the TANGO on it without a sound problem, although I do not have a woofer on the Beige G3 so there is no SRS. I am networking the two systems.]

Pictures of the 6500 CPU fan: Torsten was kind enough to send me some pictures of his 6500's CPU fan while he swapped it out for a new fan. Thanks Torsten. I'll have this pictures posted in my 6400 Take Apart Manual on my next update.

CD containing The 6400 Zone plus past history for sale 9/3/1999

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in purchasing a CD with my entire up-to-date site as well as my 6400 Take Apart Manual? Plus, many of the past Just Updates included! I think this would be a great idea for anyone who hasn't been able to keep up or never saw my site until recently. Also for those of you with Sherlock the CD is even better cause you can tell Sherlock to index the CD and then you can do a search on any topic, and if I ever talked about it, you'll find it! I have info as far back as mid 1997. I'm asking $15 which includes shipping for US residents (not sure what the price for international shipments would be yet?) and I will even include a few surprises! To make this offer even juicier I can add some download that you've been trying to get but just couldn't for some reason. Lets put my cable modem to work :) I will accept personal checks but I won't mail out the CD till it clears.

Please include your shipping address and email so I can let you know the CD is on its way.

amazon.com, books and more 7/2/98

I found a great way to earn some money while getting great deals to you on Macintosh books and software plus they have all kinds of other books, music, and more. Please click on the amazon.com link on the top of this page whenever you feel like purchasing something to help sponsor this site. If you're unsure of what you want and wish to get a list of Mac related items, just type Macintosh in the search field on their home page and you will be presented with many choices to select.

The 6400 Zone is created to help you gain access to useful software updates and great shareware programs that add functionality to your system. It is also a one stop road map to other informative sites for answering your questions. Most of the info here is geared towards the 6400, but it is useful for all PCI Performa models and even the 6500 and all-in-one Macs based on the same. It's even useful to other MAC systems. I will be referring to my 6400/200 clocked to 220Mhz as just 6400/220, OK.

I will keep it updated as often as I can but I don't have much free time to work on it, so I suggest you check back at least once every a week. That should be sufficient. If you don't see something you would like to see here or have your own software / web site that would benefit the Mac community, please write to me at zone6400@mac.com and I will check it out.

I use a Performa 6400/Vimage G3 320 OS 9.0.4 and ASIP 6.3.2, B&W G3/350 OS 9.2.1 / OSX 10.1.1, iBook Dual USB OS 9.2.1 / OSX 10.1, PM 6100 G3/240 OS 9.1, and a PowerBook DUO 270c OS 7.5.5. If I encounter any problems, I will post them for all to read and respond to. Likewise, if you are having any problems and would like help just email me and if I can answer it I will, or I will post it here for others to read and respond to.

If any of the links do not work properly, please send an email to me the Site Master
