Happy Holidays from The 6400 Zone!

The 6400 Zone would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. My next update will be sometime mid January. Have fun :)

Update on my internet service! COX sent me a letter stating that they where able to come to an agreement with @Home to keep the service running for 3 more months. This should give COX enough time to get their own service operational. I hope so and I also hope that the service won't be hindered like the other companies that I have been reading about! It seems others have jumped the gun and where not fully prepared to host all their users on such short notice limiting the speed of their users cable service!

Update on "FORBIDDEN" errors when trying to visit my site?: I think this problem is solved? I have not had any of these Forbidden errors for a week now. Looks like Apple fixed it :)

6500 CPU fan removal instructions: Torsten was kind enough to send me some pictures of his 6500's CPU fan while he swapped it out for a new fan. Thanks Torsten. OK, I found me a new fan for my 6500 and added a fan to my 6100 too :)

here it is:

I bought them on a norwegian pc mod web shop for $19.92 (178 NOK) each. There were 3 different types, 19 dBa, 26 dBa and 29 dBa. I chose the 19 dBa fan witch is the most quite. and after I installed the fan I could almost not hear it, great :)

the connector is a 3 pin not a 2 pin, but it fits perfect on the 2 pin connector. See the pictures

The "6m3/time" stands for an air flow of 6 cubic meters per hour. If anyone would care to convert this to cubic feet per minute (CFM), I would greatly appreciate that :) {I Already got it. See below. Thanks - Tom} Then it could be compared to the CFM readings I have posted on other replacement fans linked here (you need to scroll down a bit to get to the CPU fan section)

I think I can help you on this one.
OK:

First (6 m3 / hr) X (1 hr / 3600 sec) = 0.00016666667 m3 / sec

According to the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics 74th Edition p.1-28, "To convert ft3/min to m3/sec multiply by .0004719474" So to go the opposite way (m3/sec to ft3/min) multiply by 2118.88

0.00016666667 m3 / sec X 2118.88 = 3.5315 ft3/min = 3.5315 CFM

6 m3 / hr = 3.5315 CFM
8 m3 / hr = 4.7086 CFM
9 m3 / hr = 5.2972 CFM

The 8m3/hr and 9m3/hr are just for reference. The result for the 6m3/hr is the one for the fan mentioned above.

Keith also just sent me his info on replacing both the CPU fan and the power supply fan. Thanks Keith.

[I had a noisy fan on a 6500. Thought it was the power supply fan, but after replacing that I realized it was the CPU fan. (Tip-troubleshoot by pulling out board & disconnecting CPU fan first & see if noise goes away on next power-up)

I found a replacement for the CPU fan from Radio Shack (part#273-240) for $10 (spec: 40mm Brushless 12VDC MicroFan) - Use original screws to mount...fan has no connector, I cut & soldered the original connector to the new fan wires. Add some heat sink compound (part#276-1372) to the heat sink for best thermal transfer.

I also found a replacement power supply fan at CompUSA. SKU#280286 $10 (3 pin 3.625" 12VDC Ball Bearing Fan). The third (blue) wire is not used. I was able to use the supplied connector & plugged onto the board, leaving the connector overhanging (not connected) at the blue wire. It does not lock the connector as tightly, so I secured it with a cable tie to the adjacent connector.]

OS 9.2.2 is out!: Apple quietly released OS 9.2.2 last week. You can get a copy of it here. It will need a hack just like OS 9.2.1 did for it to work on our Macs. Antonio was nice enough to give us his experience with OS 9.2.2 on a 6400. Thanks Antonio!

I think that some of you would like to know that my 6400 is running MacOS 9.2.2 since yesterday. For more details on how to do that, you can see MacFixIt Forum.
So far, 9.2.2 stability seems to be as good as 9.2.1 patched with Kenny's „System 9.2.1 US OW patch v6 (BTW, I am the anonymous reader quoted in Thomas Koons' MacOS 9.2.x Info Page (http://homepage.mac.com/zone6400/files/OS_92x.html. Antonio is my real first name but I think that I will remain anonymous because there are zillions of Antonios all over the World!).

To get a running copy of MacOS 9.2.2 I began with a copy of MacOS 9.2.1 patched with „System 9.2.1 US OW patch v6 and I used the following procedure:

1- Got a copy of the file „System 9.2.2 US OW resc 9.2a4 from http://homepage.mac.com/cywong/FileSharing.html (Kenny says that you can also try the file „System 9.2.2 US OW resc 9.1 , but „System 9.2.2 US OW resc 9.2a4 worked very well for me. I have tried before to use Kenny's „System 9.2.2 US OW patch v7 and „System 9.2.2 US OW patch v7p with no success.).
2- Made a copy of my active MacOS 9.2.1 „System Folder into a different disk partition (just in case!).
3- Used MacIDWannabe to set the mach ID to 510 (to pretend that the 6400 is a PowerMac G3, as „Mac OS 9.2.2 Update does not run in a 6400).
4- Ran the „Mac OS 9.2.2 Update and updated the System Folder copy that was obtained in step 2.
5- Saved an extra copy of „System suitcase for further experimentation. (You can skip this step.)
6- Opened the updated „System file and the „System 9.2.2 US OW resc 9.2a4 file using ResEdit. In „System 9.2.2 US OW resc 9.2a4 there are 5 resources (gtbl, gusd, gbly, gpch, vers) containing the patched and missing resources for OldWorld compatibility.
7- Opened each of them to see the individual resources inside with their specific ID. Selected and copied them. Opened the same resource group in the System file and pasted the corresponding copied resources in by replacing resources of same ID.
8- Saved the patched System file, used the „Startup Disk control panel so select the new 9.2.2 System and reboot.

Remarks:
a) If you don't understand what I wrote, DO NOT ATTEMPT to install 9.2.2. Be very careful when using ResEdit!
b) Kenny's patches are targeted to PCI PowerMacs, including 6400s and 6500s. Do not attempt to use them on NuBus machines.
c) The first time you boot onto the newly obtained 9.2.2 System, it is possible that the computer hangs with a black screen. In that case, you must zap the PRAM.

[OK. I will explain it a bit further.

To update to System 9.2.2 from 9.2.1, DL and install the MachIDWannabe control panel and set the machine ID to 510. Now put in a bootable Mac OS 9.1 CD before running the Apple Installer. After a successful installation, restart with the 'C' key pressed to boot from the Mac OS 9.1 CD as the newly updated System 9.2.2 would not run in old Macs.

There are THREE ways to upgrade a System 9.2.2 file for OldWorld compatibility with three files provided.

(1) System 9.2.2 US OW resc : If you take the ResEdit route, there is no need to DL the patchers. U must have ResEdit (an old resource editing application from Apple) in your hard disk. Make a copy of your System 9.2.2 file for patching purpose. The System file can be derived from updating either an already OW patched System 9.2.1 OR a cleanly installed non-patched System 9.2.1 file. Just do not patch the active System file in the System Folder. Open both the copied System file and the ResEdit file in ResEdit. In the ResEdit file, there are 5 resources (gtbl, gusd, gbly, gpch, vers) containing the patched and missing resources for OldWorld compatibility. U need to open each of them to see the individual resources inside with their specific ID listed. Select and copy them. Open the same resource group in the System file. Then paste the corresponding copied resources in by replacing resources of same ID. This will work in whatever country version your System is. Version 9.1 of the resource file has 2 gpch resources (#750 & 752) from System 9.1 while version 9.2a4 has them from an early beta of System 9.2. See which is more stable in your system.

(2) System 9.2.2 US OW patch v7p : If you use this patcher, there is no need to DL the resource file. Use this to patch a freshly updated System 9.2.2 US file which MUST be derived from updating an OW patched System 9.2.1 file.

(3) System 9.2.2 US OW patch v7 : If you use this patcher, there is no need to DL the resource file. Use this to patch a freshly updated System 9.2.2 US file which MUST be derived from updating a clean non-patched System 9.2.1 file.

Patching errors? That could be a problem of the ResCompare application that I use to create the patches. I tried them before posting and no problem encountered in my 2G partition. I don't have time to change the patcher to Installer VISE yet, perhaps someone will do it soon. U may up the memory of the patcher to see if that works. Perhaps it wouldn't run in hard disk of partition size larger than certain GigaBytes.

So from all of this, if you are already running a patched OS 9.2.1 install then you can try the patched 7p file. If you just installed OS 9.2.1 and updated it right away to 9.2.2 without patching or running 9.2.1 then run the patch 7 file. If neither work for some reason and you wish to venture with ResEdit then give that file a try. I see Kenny has a version 2 of each patcher so maybe they issues with the original patchers not working are fixed? I would love to hear from more people on this. Thanks

I am currently running OS 9.2.2 on both my B&W G3 and my iBook Dual USB and it seems pretty stable. I have noticed some issues on the iBook when I try to close the lid to put it to sleep though? It sometimes won't sleep and the Finder crashes. I think that may be related to a new contextual menu item I installed though called OpenWith. I removed that and so far its working fine. I'll have more stability info in a few weeks :)

One thing I noticed right away is that internet (online and filesharing) is much faster then OS 9.2.1! I don't think its as fast as OSX yet but is sure has been improved :) I like that!

I posted all the patches plus these instructions in one file to make updating easier for you :)

Sonnet posts Crescendo 1.4.7 update: JJ noticed that Sonnet released version 1.4.7 of their G3 upgrade drivers. He notes it feels faster to him! Thanks JJ.

Sonnet combo card patch for the 6500 only works with Sonnets combo card: Mike responded to my inquiry on whether Sonnets PRAM patch, to make their FW/USB combo card work on a 6500, could be used on other brands of combo cards. He says it only works on Sonnets and did not work on his OrangeMicro card. Thanks Mike. I asked about using Oranges patch and that did work but still he had audio issues as has been noted with these cards :( So he removed it for a future Mac purchase.

Mike also asked Orange about the audio issues with the combo card and here is the response he got.

I suggest if you have audio issues and it is do to the combo card, that you let the tech support of which ever brand you bought know about it. Also it wouldn't hurt to let Apple know either!

Orange Micro's USB 2 card not compatible with any pre G3 Mac?: Mike also received this info from Orange on their new USB 2 PCI card. Hopefully then can solve this?

[There is currently an incompatibility between the OrangeUSB 2 PCI card and
all pre-G3 Power Macintosh computers. Our engineering department looking
into this issue and an announcement will be made on our website when the
problem is resolved. The OrangeLink FireWire + USB 2.0 PCI card does
function in pre-G3 Power Macs so you may consider using it in place of the
OrangeUSB 2.0 card.

They say their FW / USB2 combo card does work on pre-G3 Macs though. I wonder if it will work on the 6500 and if it fixes the audio issues combo card users have been having? If anyone tries this card, I would like to know how it works. Thanks.

LibMoto and Geo Modem fix for LibMoto users no longer exist?: I tried to search Motorolas pages but I can no longer find any info on LibMoto or the fix for geo modem users with LibMoto installed? I do get a lot of search results but they all are dead links. I had found them a week ago but they seem to be gone now? If anyone can find them I sure would appreciate it! Thanks.

XPLAY makes your iPod mount on a PC!: I found an app called XPLAY that will mount your iPod on a PC like a HD. It can't add songs that are playable from the iPod but this is a good first step. The next release is supposed to add that support. Now you can share files with PC users from your iPod.

It's nice having an Apple only product that PC users can only drool over :) Now they know how we feel!
