PPP Access

How do I get a PPP account with an Internet Service Provider? - Almost all of the accounts provided by ISP's (Internet Service Providers) are PPP accounts, but you should contact your ISP to make sure that your account is a PPP account.

What software will I need to connect to a PPP account? - You can only connect to a PPP account if you have a Mac Plus with System Software version 6 and 4MB of RAM (or any newer system with the same). You will need the following System Software to connect to a PPP account (you will need additional software to actually use Internet services):

  1. MacTCP
  2. Config PPP
  3. Any software compatible with MacTCP (a good source is Andrew's MacTCP Drive-Thru)

How do I install and configure the software I need? - I have recently added two new sections to this site which explain how to install and configure MacTCP and MacPPP, they even include screenshots and a link to an installer for MacTCP and MacPPP. So, check out the new MacTCP Configuration and MacPPP Configuration sections to learn how to install and configure MacTCP and MacPPP.

How do I connect to my PPP account? - You will need to use additional software designed to use MacTCP to actually "surf" the internet, some of this software can be found at Andrew's MacTCP Drive-Thru, TUCOWS Macintosh, The Mac 512 User Group, or JAG's House. Most of the basic applications that you will need can be found in the various Internet access installers which are linked to from the Software section of this site.

I still can't get on the internet, where can I get more help? - Your ISP may have some insight into why it's not working for you, but feel free to contact me if you want, I'll be glad to help.
