Troubleshooting & Repair

What is troubleshooting? - Troubleshooting is what you pay a lot of money for somebody else to do when your Mac keeps crashing, it won't start up, etc. But, with a little practice and experimenting, you can solve almost any problem with your Mac by your self.

What are the most important things to know? - Well, the first step is to get your Mac up and running (if it has crashed or frozen), so I'd say that the most important things to rember are the key combinations for your Mac. These key combinations can be found on the Key Combinations section of this site.

I've heard of dead backup battery problems, what are they and how do I fix them? - You've heard of them too! Well, if you know you're having battery problems or have never had battery problems, it would be a good idea to check out the Backup Battery Troubleshooting page, because dead batteries can cause more problems than you think.

I'm having trouble with my floppy drives, where can I get help? - Check the Floppy Drive Repair page and see if your problems are solved there.

How do I open my Mac to fix/install/remove something? - Take a quick look at the Case Cracking (i.e. Computer Case Removal) section, it should give you the basic idea of the steps to take while removing the case from your Mac.

The screen on my 500 Series PowerBook wobbles, how do I fix it? - This is a very good question. Depending on how severely it wobbles you should definitely fix it, so check out the PowerBook 500 Series Screen Hinge Fix for more info.

Where can I find technical repair documents for my Mac and its peripherals? - Apple has its own site for product manuals at http://manuals.info.apple.com/, but does not allow public access to its technical repair manuals for its products. Therefore, individuals have had to gather the repair manuals themselves to provide access to them, on great source for technical repair manuals is JAG's House's Manuals Page. JAG has manuals in both PDF (Portable Document Format) format, which require a Macintosh II or better to view, and HyperCard format, which require only a Mac Plus or better to view.

I want to make custom cables or need pinouts for another reason, where can I get them? - I've added a new page with links to some of the most common pinouts people need, so check it out, it may be of help.
