Recent News (Updated: 6/6/2001)

Wednesday. June 6, 2001 - I've finially fixed my ftp problem, so I'm now able to update the site again :) I bet you didn't known I had made so many updates over the last month, eh! Well, now they've actually been uploaded! Hopefully you'll see more updates in the comming weeks now.

Wednesday, May 15, 2001 - I've made some minor HTML updates, I'm currently finishing up an article for iDevGames.com so not much has been done on this site lately. I'm not currently able to check my e-mail every day, so please be patient with me if my responses are not so quick for a while.

Sunday, May 6, 2001 - I apologize to all those that have not recieved responses to e-mails in well over a week. Last week was finals week at my college, so I never had time to check my e-mail, and this week was spent moving off campus back to the lovely state of Vermont. I was just able to check my e-mail a few minutes ago after finally hooking my PowerBook up to the Internet again and discovered I had 488 messages waiting. I'm off to sort through them all right now and will get my responses out as soon as possible. I still can't believe how many messages I got!

Thursday, April 26, 2001M - Well, I have taken down the PowerBook Server a bit early and packed it a away in it's carrying case so that I'll have a bit more time to study over the weekend will have less packing to do. Sorry for those that were planning on visiting it, I know a couple people had already visited it today.

Friday, April 20, 2001 - I've updated when the Classic Server Project will be up in May, this will be its First Anniversary so you should definitely stop by and visit. I have removed the links to the PowerBook Server from the entrance page even though it won't officially go offline for another week or so. It has become VERY out of date with this version of the site due to some issues with AppleTalk in Mac OS X. I've done some minor graphical and HTML updates to the main page to make it look better across all a wider range of browsers.

Thursday, April 12, 2001 - Well, since Apple's birthday week is over I've removed the happy birthday picture from the main page to conserve screen real estate. I've also fixed the day when the Mac Classic Webserver will be up (the date was right, but I had accidentally left it as a Wednesday, it's really a Saturday). That's it for now. I'll be done with school in a couple weeks, once I finish a CVS article I'm writing for iDevGames.com I'll try to get more done on the Cross Platform Compatibility section.

Sunday, April 1, 2001 - Happy 25th Birthday Apple! Seriously, Apple was founded on April 1st, 1976, on April fool's day! Anyway, as for site news, I've done some minor modifications to the Contact page, but for the most part they won't really be noticable. Nothing else new at the moment.

Sunday, March 25, 2001 - I've updated when the Mac Classic Webserver will be up in April, one thing to note is that this time there is no set ending time, this is because Marshall Lewis would like people in Europe to have a chance to visit this month! I've updated the Backup Battery Troubleshooting page to better emphasize the fact that some Macs won't start up at all with a dead backup battery. I've also started a running list of Macs that have this problem, if you know of one not on my list then please contact me. Also, if you haven't stopped by The Mac 512 lately, there's a bunch of cool stuff including scans of earlier Apple pamphlets, very cool stuff! And one last thing, as many of you probably know, Mac OS X was released yesterday! My copy arrived, but my mail box service doesn't accept packages on the weekends :( so I'll be getting my copy tomorrow (atleast now I've had time to backup my whole hard drive!) I'm trying to work more updates into this site into my busy schedule, so hopefully you'll be seeing more updates soon.

Say good bye to The PowerBook 520 Server, don't worry, it's not forever. As school ends on May 2nd (I have to be moved out by May 3rd), I will no longer have my dedicated connection to the Internet anymore, meaning that I will have to take the PowerBook 520 offline until this fall :(

Sunday, February 25, 2001 - Somewhere around 1AM... Well, I've made a big update! I've finished up a lot of the work on the new Cross-platform Compatibility section and put it online! It now includes expanded content on Mac and Windows compatibility (the second half of that section will be comming soon), Be OS compatibility, UN*X compatibility, and information for emulators of and for various platforms. Hope you all find it helpfull. I've also updated the To Do section (it's a bit more detailed this time) so hopefully I'll get some more updates done soon. Now off to do some studying...

Saturday, February 24, 2001 - I've updated when the Mac Classic Webserver will be up in March, remember to check it out. I've been doing a lot of development, but there are some things here I'd like to update, so bug me if you don't see more updates in the next few weeks.

Sunday, January 21, 2001 - I finally got Classic working agian under Mac OS X Beta, so I'm now running it 24/7 on my G3 again! I also discoved that vMac 1.9c is out, it has been fully carbonized and now works on Mac OS X (yes, I've personally tested it!), it is a Mac Plus emulator which is available for Mac, Windows, and various UN*X operating systems. I've also updated when the Classic Mac Web Server will be up.

Thursday, January 11, 2001 - So, Steve Jobs' MacWorld Keynote Speech was very cool! Check it out if you have a PowerPC Mac. Makes life for our Classics look a bit more bleak. Since I'm back at school the PowerBook Server is now in sync with the one on SoVerNet's Servers. I've added a new page in the Troubleshooting & Repair section with Pinouts Links, hope some of you out there find it interesting. Hope everybody has had a good start to 2001!

Tuesday, December 26, 2000 - The December issue of The Mac512 User Group Newsletter has been released, it can be found in the Resource Center of the Mac512 User Group. This issue covers PowerBook Duo 210 & 230, Duo Dock and Adding an Ethernet card in your Macintosh, check it out. Sorry I haven't been updating much of the information on this site, life's been more busy than I'd expected, hopefully I'll get back to this site soon. BTW, the PowerBook Server will be out of sync until sometime after January 9th, 2001, this is due to the fact that I'm on vacation and don't actually have access to the computer.

Saturday, December 23, 2000 - Happy holidays! I have updated the main page as to when the Classic Mac Web Server will be up in January. Also, Ben has informed me of another interesting effect of dead PRAM batteries in the LC/Performa/Quadra Macs, check it out on the Backup Battery Troubleshooting page.

Thursday, November 23, 2000 - Happy Thanksgiving to those that celebrate it! I've updated when the Classic Mac Web Server will be up in December, so check it out.

Saturday, November 11, 2000 - Well, I finally got my computer back, so the PowerBook Server is back up now. Also, the I have updated when the Classic Mac Web Server will be up this month. That's all for now, I've got lots of other work to be doing.

Sunday, October 29, 2000 - Sorry, not much news. I was on vacation without my computer :( so I didn't get to do work on it, and now the PowerBook Server will be down until I get my computer back (hopefully next weekend).

Saturday, October 14, 2000 - I've been doing a lot of school work lately (my first term is going to end this week, but I've managed to update the home page with the new buttons (should load a little faster). And, I've consolidated all of those blue alert tables with news in them into a single table (should keep load times down slightly when there is more news. I haven't seen any traffic lately :( too bad, I've been looking forward to seeing how the server can hold up. But, it seems everybody is too busy right now (doesn't seem to be much activity at all in the Classic Mac community).

Monday, October 9, 2000 - I whipped up the new images for the nav bar today, they should help to speed up the site a tad bit (probably not enough to be noticeable, but it'll help), and it will fit better on small monitors, not to mention the fact that they are now correct (the old ones were not true Aqua tabs, just based on the ones from Apple's site as at the time there were now tabs shown in any Aqua screenshots... why? I have no idea). The only problem is that I also added and About button, so that kind of defeated the purpose of reducing the size to speed it up... Oh, well. I fixed some problems with the links to the categories in the FAQ. Oh, back to the nav bar for a second, I took out the my links button as it was out dated anyway. I'm thinking of changing all the content bevel buttons (on the home page) to not include the text underneath, but with correct ALT tags (for those with text only browsers) so that the page will load faster (fewer tables to build).

Thursday, October 5, 2000 - I mentioned in my last update that my PowerBook 520 Web Server (pb520.dhs.org) was going to be up soon... Well, my hub came, and now it's up 24/7! It's got a 10Base-T connection to my Internet connection (which is a T3), so it shouldn't be too slow, but I do ask that you try it out and contact me to let me know how well it's been working (or not). It's even in sync with the version hosted by SoVerNet, so there's no reason you shouldn't try it. Also, now that I am running MacOS X Beta I think I will be fixing the nav bar to look more realistic, some may not like this, but it will reduce the height of the nav bar, and the size of the images, so it will probably improve the performance and make it a little more compatible for users of Macs with smaller screens!

Wednesday, September 20, 2000 - MacOS X Beta! Well, it's been a week since I ordered my copy of MacOS X Beta, but it's finally here, and it rocks! I'm editing the site from MacOS X Beta right now. No out of memory errors, no full crashes (well, one so far, but that was not related to any single app, and it hasn't come back). The Aqua interface is sweet, it can get a little slow when tons of apps are running all at once, but that's the price you pay for preemptive multiprocessing (but it's cool that programs are still running when it slows down, not just one running slowly like with the cooperative multitasking of previous versions of the MacOS). Makes me wish I had my Lisa here to try to get running again, that had preemptive multitasking. Anyway, very cool. I have a PowerBook 520 set up as a web server which I will put into testing for this site soon (you'll see an option on the entrance page to try the PB520 Server), but I have to wait until I can finally get a new hub (the one thing I left home without) before I can get that running. Actually, it's up and running, sometimes, at pb520.dhs.org, just not all the time. Also, it was time for a new news page (the previous one was getting too full).
