Recent News (Updated: 9/6/2000)

Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - I think it's still before midnight anyway! Well, I'm still settling into college life (only on my first full week of classes), so I haven't done much work on this site. I need to learn to manage my time better, since I'm working on this site, articles for my personal site, helping out at iDevGames.com, trying to do my college work, do programming of my own, and I have a part time work study! Anyway, small update today, I discovered MacFreewares today and felt it was something every Mac user should check out (it's got tons of freeware for 68k and PowerPC Macs) so I've added links to it in the Links and Software sections. Boy do I miss working on this site!

Friday, August 11, 2000 - Well, my ISP has spoiled my plans for Perl scripting a lot of this site. As it turns out, I have to have a special account to be able to run Perl scripts, Argh! Well, I've been busy moving into my new computer (yes, it takes time), and maybe at some point while I'm off at college I will get an ethernet card for my LCIII and a monitor switch and run my LCIII as a web server so that I can run my perl scripts that way, but I doubt the LCIII would perform well enough to be a web server. I'll have to think on this for a while, I wish I could make a deal with my ISP to have them give me access to perl, but I I don't think they'de be too keen on that idea. Anyway, I'm rewriting my AGL & DSp Tutorial (Mac Specific OpenGL stuff), and porting a lot of NeHe's Tutorials, but I'll try to get some work done on the Cross Platform Compatibility stuff before I go back to school (don't worry, all my Classic Mac info is going with me, but, sadly, no Classic Macs are :( Enjoy the last bit of the summer, for those of you that will be in school this fall.

Sunday, August 6, 2000 - Well, obviously my last fix also didn't work, but this time it really did... finally! I can't believe how busy I've been with work and all, I've still got to finish up some of the Cross Platform Compatibility stuff and add a Perl script to automate some of the site so that you all can add links and stuff on your own, hope that gets used atleast some (when it actually gets implemented).

Tuesday, July 25, 2000 - Yes, the pages were still messed up, but that's because I hadn't uploaded them yet. Modem problems. My modem has been doing this weird clicking noise about everu two seconds, it turns out that the modem drops it's drain on the electrical current after it first starts up, but since I have to run it off of the DC to AC converter in the house with solar power which stops converting power if there isn't enough drain on the electrical outlet! So, I now have to have my PowerBook plugged in for the modem to work (and here I've been trying to use my PowerBook's batteries the whole time!) Anyway, the changes have been made finally.

Sunday, July 23, 2000 - Well, those of you have checked back since Monday might have noticed that all the pages had grey background, it should be fixed now, but if not, please contact me. That'll teach me to not verify that my batch processing of HTML files went as planned. Hope some of you watched, or went to, the MacWorld Expo, I did! Very cool new stuff, especially the G4 Cube! If you missed it, but have a PowerMac which can handle streaming video via QuickTime 4, then check out Steve Jobs' Keynote Speech. Hopefully, soon, I'll have some time to do more updates along with getting some programming time in too.

Monday, July 17, 2000 - Not much to show for my work lately, I've been working on the re-write of the Cross Platform compatibility sections (yes, that's plural now). I'm about 50% complete with the Macs & Windows section and about 75% done with the Macs & BeOS section (that one's short as it has cool compatibility features already built in), I haven't gotten to assess the work on the Macs & UN*X section yet (you may remember it from the news quite a while back). Anyway, you won't notice the changes yet (and they still will need to be gone over again a little when I'm done), but they're getting there (thank Vermont for homes off the Power grid!) The Macworld Expo in New York is this week (starting Wednesday, I think), I can't go (working), but I'll probably listen to Steve Jobs' keynote speech while I work!

Tuesday, July 11, 2000 - Well, some of you may have noticed that this site didn't actually get updated on July 2nd, atleast not uploaded. I wrote a Perl script for a links page which anybody can add links to which I think I may adapt for the Software section, so that anybody can submit links to software. The Classic Mac community seems to be a bit slow lately, I don't know why, it just seems fairly quiet. I am living in a house with "alternative energy" (i.e. solar power) for about a month, so hopefully I'll get a few more updates done (because I'm away from my power hungry iMac and only have my PowerBook 520 with me). It has made me appreciate both Classic Macs and PowerBooks a lot more, so maybe it will prompt me to write more!

Sunday, July 2, 2000 - Ahhhhhhhh... my vacation was great! I managed to not use a computer the whole time! I've started my new job at NewsBank which is fun, but may take more time out of this site. Thanks to DHS International you can now also get to the Classic Mac Workshop via classicmac.n3.net and my site (which I just redesigned) via morgan.n3.net.

Monday, June 19, 2000 - I've added a link to HFVExplorer to the Cross Platform Compatibility section (don't know why I never did it earlier) after correspondance with a couple people as to how to get files to their Classic Macs from PCs. I made a button for the new Preparing for MacOS X section, so you can now find it on the main page (home). That's it for today, I leave for vacation early Wednesday morning and will be away for a week, so expect delays in replies to e-mails.

Saturday, June 17, 2000 - I made it! Graduated Wednesday! Yeah, now off to college at the end of the summer! Bet you thought I was older than that, huh! Anyway, I've added a link to MacStedet (MacPlace) to the Links section and have almost completed a short section on SCSI (I ran into some inconsitancies in my knowledge of it so have been trying to get it straightened out in my head). I'm on my week of vacation right now (yeah, only a week before I start my internship) so might be able to get some more stuff done, but don't count on too much because I have to teach myself Java (not hard, but I'll spend a long time playing with it) and Perl (haven't really gotten it yet). Enjoy your summer! I wrote up a short section on preparing for MacOS X (even with a Classic Mac), and spent over an hour looking for Aqua themes, but Apple requested they all be removed. Arghh! Anyway it's here until I make a button on the main page for it.

Wednesday, June 14, 2000 - Wow, quick update. A member of the Mac 512 User Group informed me that MacinTalk does infact work on a Mac 128K, so I've updated the Software section to reflect that. Also, I've had an offer for my downloads to be hosted by a fellow Mac user in Denmark, so what would you people especially like to see available for download? I know I try to provide links to most software available off-site, but would gladly post any... Er, some freeware, shareware, or other legal software that you would like to see, the space is not really mine to give away, so e-mail me with names of the software and I'll try to see what I can do.

Monday, June 12, 2000 - I just finished adding a link to Apple Addicts ONLINE to the Links section. I'm kinda psyched, I just finished putting together my ultimate 68k PowerBook system: a PowerBook 520; Color StyleWriter 2200; and an external SCSI portable CD-ROM; I'd still like to add an internal modem and get a PCMCIA Expansion Module, but those can wait. It's taken me a year to build this system up so far, but it only cost me just over $300 total (including ethernet), so it pays to take your time (I even have an external monitor for it). But, enough about that, it probably isn't that interesting to you anyway, I've got to copy my UN*X doc onto it and finish that up (when did I start that thing anyway). I'd like to take a break from programming to get more done on this site, but I've got all these great ideas running around in my head!

Friday, June 2, 2000 - Ah, a new month! I haven't updated much, but I did finish my article on the Digital Divide (which can be found under the Articles & Reviews section). There is a new petition out which will attempt to convince software developers to release older Mac software as freeware to the Classic Mac community, so check it out at http://mivox.com/essays/ and sign it if you would like.

Sunday, May 21, 2000 - I added an answer to the FAQ which covers the HD SC Setup patch (it's under the Troubleshooting & Repair heading) which I should have done long ago. I won't be updating the site much (like I have been anyway) for about a month because I have a bunch of final projects to do (one of which will end up on this site) before the end of the school year (and will be starting a new job). I will need to start teching myself Pearl, so expect some pearl scripts to show up every once in a while.

Thursday, May 11, 2000 - Well, I finally buckled down and finished the PowerBook 500 Series Screen Hinge Fix (it has been almost done for a long time), so that's one less thing to do! I really need to finish my UN*X article this weekend, but I also have an entry planned for the OpenGL Challenge so I don't know if I'll get to it. I rewrote My Personal Site so check it out (there are even more OpenGL demos there now).

Friday, May 5, 2000 - Ah I finally have some spring weather here! Anyway, now that I've finally gotten over the cold or whatever it was that I had all last week I can get back to work. I've got a bunch of big exams next week, so I hope to do a few small updates this weekend, but nothing big. My idea of rewriting the whole structure of this site fell through when I discovered how much work it really would be (and I thought it would just be a bit of copying and pasting). Oh, well, I worked slightly on the Cross Platform Compatibility section and have a pretty good idea of where I'm going with it now (none of the changes will actually be implemented online yet, so you will still have to wait a bit). I've done a bunch of OpenGL demos since my last update to my personal site (Morgan) so I need to update that too. I still have to clean up my article on installing NetBSD, so that'll probably be first on my list. I've added a few Q&A's to the FAQ about sound and music (they are under the "Software" heading).

Thursday, April 20, 2000 - I've made an outline of a new system of organization for this site. It will group relevent things together slightly better than the current implementation so I hope to do it soon. This was brought on by my attempt to reorganize the Cross Platform Compatibility section which failed because I had no clear way set to organize it.

Wednesday, April 19, 2000 - Why is it so hard to work during vacations? I guess it's just that this stuff doesn't really HAVE to be done, it's stuff I want to do, so for some reason that gives me permission to put it off. Argh! Okay, well, I've spent the last three days installing NetBSD on an LCIII and documenting the experience. I hope to have two drafts of the document done soon (one being a full account of the whole experience, the other being a step-by-step of how to install NetBSD on a 68K Mac). I can't believe I didn'y even upload my changes (what few there were) on Friday... oops, no excuse for that one. I almost got back to my short news posts though! Almost.

Friday, April 14, 2000 - I have added a picture of a Mac keyboard to the Key Combinations section. Added more computers to the Specifications section. Oh, yeah, I have vacation this week, so along with doing various programming projects I hope to work on this site more.

Sunday, April 9, 2000 - We finally got our first day of nice weather (70úF), so I spent my day outside enjoying it. Then, in the late afternoon it started to get windy. And when I say windy I mean really windy... As in I watched a tree fall behind my house and a 5-10 pound piece of our chimney flew off. No sooner had all this happened when a power line about 300-400 feet from my house went down, so I spent the next 12 hours without any power (and the clock battery in my PowerBook is dead, preventing me from turning it on without the AC adaptor, so I couldn't even work on this site with that). But it was still a wicked nice day! And now... It's snowing (and when it's not snowing it's raining). But, on a good note, I finally found that paper explaining how to fix the PowerBook 500 Series screen hinge problem, so I can finish that section soon. I've been working on updating Cross Platform Compatibility section so that you can more easily distinguish info for different platforms and so I can add more sub-sections to it. Also, I found a really good Aqua Theme for Appearance under MacOS 8.5 today from MacOS Resources!

Tuesday, April 4, 2000 - Man, did I fall for some April Fool's jokes! But, I don't really want to talk about it... actually they weren't that bad, except for JAG's, I had just gotten up when I read that one. He had me going for a good half hour until I realized what day it was, I heard he got something like 150 e-mails from people! Anyway, I wrote up a review of Vicomsoft's SurfDoubler last weekend so I hope to convert that to HTML and have it up tonight. I entered my clouds demo into the GL Challenge (inspired by the two week theme for GL Challenge), so check it out (there's a Windows port of it there too, thanks Aaron!) Oh, and you may have noticed on your way in that I have changed my e-mail address yet again. It's much more appropriate now. I've put the review of SurfDoubler up (now read back a couple of sentances... can you believe that a couple of hours just passed while you were reading this?) In addition to adding the review, I have also added a new Reviews section and have added a link to SurfDoubler and the review in the TCP/IP Networking section. I have made a few other minor updates here and there (including the To Do section), but today's news is long enough as it is.

Saturday, April 1, 2000 - Happy 24th Birthday Apple! A brand new, nice and clean, news page... woohoo!
